I am very overweight and pregnant. I need to find an OB in my area (cuyahoga/geauga county). Any recommendations for someone who is both good and sensitive in this type of situation? TIA!
Hi, I am overweight & was before getting pregnant. I'm not sure where you live exactly but I go to a Dr. Fernbach who's office is in North Olmsted he delivers thru Fairview Hospital. He was my doctor before I was pregnant w/ the twins & now w/ my single pregnancy. I really like his bedside manners & I also LOVE Fairview Hospital they were great w/ the twins delivery & my post-partum recovery.

oh darn! that sounds great... but we're in Solon so that's probably about 25 miles from us. will have to think about it! thank you for replying... you're the only one so far!! did you have healthy pregnancies, despite being overweight? i'm technically in the obese or higher category and while i've been steadily losing weight, a lot of what i've been reading online freaks me out!
Thanks! Which Dr. Rao? There are at least two I've come across so far. Right now I've scheduled an appt with Geauga Women's Specialties to see how I like them. The only problem is that they only deliver out of Geauga Hospital. From what I've seen, Geauga has a great birthing center, but the rest of the hospital sucks. So if there are not complications, that would work. Though it is also 20 miles from here. There is also a chance my insurance will change first of the year so we could have to change then anyway. Keep the suggestions coming. We're going to go ahead with this appointment and see how we like the practice. One thing I like so far is that they were super nice on the phone. I can't think of a doctors office I have called lately where hte receptionist hasn't sounded like she hated her job and wants to hurt you. the receptionist at geauga women's specialties was really nice and helpful. also interesting, there are several doctors in the practice and apparently you rotate your appointments through them so that if you're doctor is not there when you go into labor, you know all of the others who could deliver you. we'll see!
When I was an east-sider, I saw Paula Shaffer-Polakof at Hillcrest. Wasn't pregnant at the time, but really liked her and would recommend her. When I moved across town, she referred me to my current OB, who I also really like. Good luck!

Both the twin & this singelton pregnancy have been problem free for me. I was really affraid w/ being more overweight this time around I was going to have gestational diabetes & that, but so far so good. I just really tried to eat healthy during the pregnancy, but I'll tell you I didn't pass up anything if I really wanted it. I too am in the obese & higher category. It doesn't show so bad b/c I'm tall 5'11" but I'm pushing around ALOT of weight while being pregnant.. I'm too embarrassed to tell anyone how much I currently weigh & I only gained 15lbs this pregnancy.

@jenni&chris2-- did you ever have trouble with them being able to detect stuff on your ulstrasound bc of your weight? i have a huge amount of fat in my lower abdomen and i worry they won't be able to hear heartbeat or see baby. lilke giant fat roll city. everyone carries their weight differently... was this ever a problem for you?
No, I didn't have a problems w/ the ultrasounds. With the twin pregnancy I didn't have a bunch of extra baggage in the ab area, but w/ this pregnancy I had/have ALOT it still looked like I was about 5 months pregnant when I wasn't pregnant & I was really worried they would have a problem w/ seeing/hearing anything b/c of the extra baggage, but they had no problem at all.
