Temp of 99.4

Hello,

First let me introduce myself, my name is Irene and I am a new mom, I have also lurked a bit on this board since my son was born on July 28th. This morning when I took my son out of his crib, he spit up or through up all over himself and me, and then continued to poop quite a bit. I changed his diaper and checked his temperature which was a 99.6. He is normally at about a 97-98 so this is a little high for him. I called his doctor who told me that this is ok, but if his temp rises to 100.5 to consider that an emergency. He also said that if he is not acting strangely the to check his temp every hour and let them if he gets worse. This was about 2 hours ago. I checked his temp. about 45 minutes ago and it was 99.4 so really no change. What would you guys do? a part of me wants to take him to the office, but i don't know if that's necessary. Since his vomiting/spit up episode this morning he has been fine, he nursed  and is currently hanging out in his vibrating chair directly in front of me, in fact, he was smiling at me the whole time I was on the phone with the doctor, I am just worried because he is only 3.5 weeks old.

Re: Temp of 99.4

  • I wouldn't worry about it too much. That temp is completely normal, babies tend to run warmer than us. DS's normal temp is around 99.4. DS also spit up a LOT during the first month or two, I think it was just both of us learning how much he needs to eat and how often and all that. I wouldn't worry. But continue to check his temp if it makes you feel better. :)

  • I'd also not be too worried yet seeing as he's acting fine now.

My pedi told me to call on anything over 100.5. Before that it's just normal baby temp. fluxes. He also said lethargy was a big sign and a good reason to call.

If he keeps spitting up I'd be more concerned, but it's a one time occurence for a lot of babies.

  • I would take him in if it were me. It WAS me two weeks when DD was 11 days old. She had a temp of 99 orally. We checked it rectally and it was 100 and so we took her in. Have you checked rectally? That's the most accurate. My DD spent a week in the hospital with pneumonia. Her only symptom was a low fever and luckily we caught it early because I took her in as soon as I noticed it. Not to say this is what your DS has but it did teach me it's better to be safe than sorry. Don't worry about being THAT mom who may be overprotective. If your gut says take him in, I would take him in. Good luck!
  • If it was a rectal temp, I would keep an eye on it (recheck occasionally) but not worry.  If it was not rectal, absolutley take a rectal one.

  • My DD runs high always. Our Pedi told us that is not a temp...
  • My pediatrician told me that a fever is a temp of 100.3 or higher. I'm sure you LO is ok, but definitely keep an eye on it.

  • Thank you so much for your responses - I ended up giving LO a warm bath, fed him again, and let him take a nap. When he woke up I took his temp rectally again and he was down to 98.8. I will check again with his next diaper change, but I was relieved to see it go down. Thanks again for all of your responses.
