help! what's going on with DS? (nursing/poop/eating issues)

I think something is going on with DS and I can't decide if it is an issue I should bring to the pedi, or just wait another day or so, or what.  any help is appreciated!

DS has been nursing or drinking from bottles less in the past day or so - he just seems uninterested and only finishes an ounce or two per sitting vs. 5oz he usually takes. Even DCP wasn't able to get him to finish more than one bottle yesterday when he normally has two. he seems happy and content but i'm a little worried he isn't getting enough nutrition if this keeps up.

sorry in advance for the grossness -  but the past couple of days DS has also had really loose poop often and i'm wondering if it's normal or if i should be concerned.

when we first introduced baby food he had more solid poop and then it started to get looser, like it was when he just had breastmilk.  he still pooped often, like 2-3 times a day.  the last day or so though, he's pooped even more, like 4-5 times a day and its been looser, and so much that it's leaked out of diapers.  He had two dirty diapers overnight even, which is really unlike him.

so, how can I tell if this is normal pooping or cause for concern?  anything i can do to help either the drinking or the pooping issue?

i'm kind of worried they're happening at the same time, i don't want him to get dehydrated or anything like that.  we just went for his 6 month appointment on friday and everything was great, he's 18.5 lbs so we're definitely ok weight-wise and i don't want to be overly worrisome.

TIA!

  • Have you started any new foods with him?  I wonder if it is a food intolerance/irritation that is causing the poop issue.  And then his belly may be hurting from not agreeing with a new food and so he may not want to eat.  That being said, that should equate to a fussy baby, not a happy one.  DD#2 started having some similar issues when we introduced her to organic cow's milk (obviously at an older age than your son and she had been fine with regular cow's milk) and we had to wait a few weeks for it to clear up after switching back to regular milk.  We went to the pedi but there wasn't anything they could do about it aside from tell us what to look for if it got worse.  Could you try to feed him more often, so that is may add up to more every day?  Is he still eating solids?  Or has his appetite for those also decreased?

  • He could have a stomach bug or GI issue of some sort, which would result in looser BMs and not wanting to eat as much. If this has only been going on for a day, I'd probably wait another day to see if his symptoms improve. Does he have a fever?

Or, like pp stated, he could've had a GI reaction to something he ate. Have you introduced any new foods over the last couple of days? If so, remove them from his diet for a few days and see if his symptoms go away. The next time you give him that food, pay attention to see if the symptoms come back. If they do, then he may have an intolerance to that food.

  • He's been more agreeable to baby food and cereal than to bottle or nursing, and we haven't really introduced anything new - except that we went to stage 2 foods, but they are all variations of stage 1 stuff he ate before.  Maybe I'll just go back to the stage 1 foods I know were ok....

He hasn't seemed feverish but we haven't taken a temp - I need to find my thermometer, it got lost in our move recently.

  • 2 weeks before my DS cuts a tooth he gets these really really foul poops.  Just darn right nasty.  Have you checked his gums?

this is what i was thinking might be a cause - the nursing books also say nursing or drinking from a bottle can be painful if his gums are already from teething...i checked his gums this morning and didn't feel anything coming through but i also don't really know what it would feel like until it was out!

  • well, i think it might be a stomach bug - he was sent home from daycare for throwing up twice (when he ate bananas) but he did ok with cereal this morning and a bottle this afternoon. hopefully he's over it soon!

  • hope he's better soon; since he's on solids it's OK to give him water and just try to nurse as much as you can to keep him hydrated.

DS had some horrible, slimy green poops about 2mo after starting solids, it's like his body just realized it wasn't just taking in only BM, it was a tough 10 days but he went back to normal.
