Transitioning to whole milk Q's

Hey girls,

Any help in regards to transitioning to whole milk?  We are no longer BF'ing so he's on formula.  We have been doing 4 oz. formula and 2 oz. whole milk in his bottles.  He's down to 4 bottles/day and I'd like to hopefully transition to a sippy/straw cup (he has water in his sippy right now).

Tonight at bed time I did 4 oz. formula and 4 oz. milk and he wasn't interested in it until I made him a new bottle... :-/  Any tips?  Oh and LO doesn't seem to like warm bottles, he's used to room temp. water I guess?  How do you guys warm up the milk?

One more Q, what kind of sippy cups are your fave?  LO prefers a straw sippy it seems but we have a couple varieties.  TIA :)

Re: Transitioning to whole milk Q's

  • We actually warmed up the water a bit and then mixed it with the formula and then with the milk.  Did you try a 3oz and 3oz?  Maybe that's more gradual for him.  We also had a bottle warmer that we used (really just warmed to room temp), but he got used to the cold pretty quickly and didn't care - maybe b/c it was summer?

Can you make them like 30 minutes before you feed him and let it sit out on the counter to get to room temp?

We love these straw cups - might not want to follow my advice though b/c I can't get him to take sippy cups now - he just wants the straw ones!

No advice on transitioning to whole milk  but as far as warming up the milk...i put some water inside a small bucket and nuke it in the microwave for 50 secs. I put the milk bottle in there to warm up the milk.

For sippies, E just recently transitioned to straw sippies. We use these. Prior to that we've been using the take and toss ones.

  • Thank you both :-)

I usually warm up the milk the same way, inside a big coffee cup with really warm water for a bit... wasn't sure if a bottle warmer would be good but at this stage I really doubt it would be worth it.

I don't think getting a bottle warmer will be worth it. Actually, we haven't been warming up E's milk for a while now. LO is used to  drinking both warm and cold milk so it's not a big deal if we're out and about and don't have any means to warm the milk.

Yeah, same with us.  I've never really warmed his bottles up, he just drinks room temp. water.  The milk is pretty cold from the fridge though so I have to warm it up.

  • As of today, we are officially formula free and bottle free!  Yay!  I started mixing the two half an half at first, just until the formula ran out.  H never seemed to care what was in it, though.  One day about a months ago I just stopped giving him bottles during the day cold turkey.  He was fine, but drank much more at meals and in between, too.  He likes Nuby straw cups best, and so do I, since they don't leak.  Tonight we tried no bedtime bottle, and he did fine.....I'm amazed!

Yay for being formula and bottle free and double yay for $ saved from the formula:-).

When did you start doing half and half? LO is turning a year old in November. I am wondering whether we need to start adding whole milk prior to that or wait after her 1st bday.

  • we did a more gradual transition.... so like 10% cow's milk, then 25%, then 50%, then 75% then worked up to 100%.  she really didn't like cow's milk and did not drink much for a looooong time, but I think that's probably b/c we were still nursing and she was getting a lot of milk that way. for the longest time (until 19-20 months?) she'd only drink 5-8 oz of whole milk per day!

we have the tommee tippee straw cups from BRU.  she likes them ok but I think she doesn't like how hard it is to suck up the milk b/c she is used to a cup so we rarely use them.  she only drinks at meal times and occasionally when she asks for it in between meals.
