2nd time mom ? for a first timer

This is WAY in advance but we are limited on space in the nursery and I wondered how crucial a changing table is.  Could you get by with just a changing mat?  I would like to use the extra space to put in a dresser since we are limited on closet/storage space and the only way we have room is if we don't have a changing table.  Thoughts?  TIA!

  • My son is 2 and a half, and we still use it multiple times a day.

Try finding a dresser with a space for a changing pad.  We bought one of Craigslist and refinished it, and it's been perfect.

  • Personally I don't think an actual changing table is a necessity, but definitely some type of designated diaper changing area is nice.  A changing pad on a dresser would be fine. I still use our changing table for our 15 month old because it's so much easier to keep her still and get in and out because all the supplies are right there.  We have a one level house though, so it's easy to run back to the bedroom to change her anytime.  If we had a two level house I might set up a changing station downstairs too.  I hate kneeling on the floor or trying to change diapers on a couch or something.

  • We have a corner changing table...it works great for us (even though DS is getting a little long for it and likes to tap me with his feet). It doesnt take up much room and can be used as a shelving unit when its not needed as a changing table.

  • changing table is not necessary...we most often changed DS on the floor even though we had a changing table.  We got a changing pad and put it on top of a dresser for a dual purpose...and put the sticky stuff that you put under a kitchen rug underneath the changing pad to keep it from slipping.

  • We just put a large changing pad on DS's dresser, but we don't even use that. I had to put him on it last night in fact for a MOTN diaper change, and he freaked out, lol. Poor kid had no idea what I had laid him down on. I just change him on the floor or the couch. We have a 2 story house, and there is no way I am taking him upstairs for each diaper change. We did have his pack-n-play in the living room for a long time, and we just kept all of his supplies in there.

  • We spent most of our time in the living room, so a changing table in her room would have been terribly inconvenient. We used the couch/floor/table/lap/whatever was around to change her on. If you don't have the space, you absolutely don't need one.

We used a small storage ottoman  to keep all of her diapering stuff together and hidden. I actually just bought one of these: https://tinyurl.com/3mkezfy from Target to keep all of the new one's stuff in.

  • We have 2 dressers, one has a hutch on top and I change DS on top above the drawers kn a pad. Much more space saving.

  • We have a pad on the dresser. But I know plenty of people with a pad that just put it on the floor/couch/bed/etc.
  • I think an elevated changing table is a necessity.Ok not a necessity in the sense that you can't live without it,  you can use the floor but that is a lot of up and down especially when you change a lot of diapers the first few months and depending on how labor goes it may not be easy the first few weeks.

We have a changing pad on a dresser and it works very well. Now that my son is 2 we change him on the floor because he is too big for the table and heavy to lift.

  • we just bought the low dresser that went with our crib and put a changing pad on it.  After our DS was about 9 months old, he was too big and mobile to change on an elevated surface, so we put the pad away and set up a changing station on the floor that we still use to this day.  We'll do the same with #2.

  • We bought a dresser that had room for the changing pad on top of it. It's really nice because it has small drawers in the top for diapers, diaper pail liners, diaper rash cream etc. I think changing tables are a waste of space.

  • I had one and never used it. being short it was just not comfortable for me. I tended to change my son on the floor with a blanket or on the couch.
  • Changing tables are a complete waste of money.  Get the curved pad that goes on top of the dresser and it is the same function.  I didn't even do that with S; I just changed him wherever.

  • Dresser with an old bassinet mattress on it for us! I do want to modify it a little bit so it has sides or cuffs or something! LOL (J/K on the cuffs. kinda.) He's so wiggly, so when I put him on the table he can usually be distracted with something where on the floor he'll just roll over and crawl away half nekkid! (okay when I've cleaned him up, not okay when he still has a pile of poop sticking to his bum :( That has happened twice now. I need to buy a carpet cleaner) Ours is not in the nursery though. ours is just in the living room. His baths are downstairs, his changes are downstairs, his toys are downstairs. The only thing we do upstairs is sleep! So we just have a diaper caddy upstairs for emergency changes in the night. You may find that your "main" diaper changing area is somewhere other than the nursery, so it may be nice to have a changing table if you don't want a dresser in the living room.
