Breastfeeding

EPers, Help!

So I have been EPing pretty much ever since DS was born. We have been having latching issues and I'm just not sure if I want to continue to try and get him to latch. I have been feeding him 2 oz . at a time every 2.5-3 hours. I had a friend come over and she said that he was showing signs that he was still hungry after his bottle. I decided to try and give him another bottle. So he ate another 2 oz. 15 minutes after his first one. He seemed happy as a clam at first. I went to lay him down so that I could pump and he spit up all over the place. I have never seen him spit up this much before. Did I overfeed him? Was it a fluke? How much should he really be getting at a time? I feel like a terrible mother right now. I don't want him starving, but I don't want to make him sick.  Sad TIA.

Re: EPers, Help!

  • I have had the same issue. I'll feed LO 2.5 oz and she'll occasionally seem hungry afterwards. Yesterday, I offered her another ounce- and about half of that came back up. Although, we can get her to eat 3oz no problem. So, we stick between 2.5-3oz now, and I'll try an extra 1/2 oz from now on!

  • Yep you fed your LO a little too much but don't say your a bad mother for that!  We all make mistakes...you live you learn.

My LO is just starting ( as of last week) to eat 4 oz at a time and he is 3 months old.  (He was a preemie so he is only 9lbs now)

We started feeding him 1.5 oz upon discharge from the hospital and increased him by .25 oz when he consistently showed signs of hunger after a feeding.  Since your child is not a preemie then I would say you can give .5 oz more but not another 2oz.

  • Thank you!! I will try this. I just felt so bad that he got sick. I will see how he does with an extra .5 oz. at his next feeding. Smile

  • Just another thought but you lo may have a bit of reflux.  I could not lay my lo down for about 30 minutes after eating or she would spit up a lot.  I would try to put her in the swing (that kept her up at an angle) or hold her upright for a while after she ate and it worked really well.  I EP also.  It lasted for the first few months but now I don't have to worry about it.  I agree w/pp's it could be that he ate a little to much but I just wanted to throw this out there also.  Good luck!

  • I agree...either a bit too much or possibly reflux.  and also for what it's worth...spitting up/throwing up supposedly doesn't bother them as much as it does moms.
