So we are having a girl (Yay!) and 1. I love the name Ruby. 2. We found out it's also the name of DH's great aunt. So Ruby is an automatic frontrunner. DH also pointed out that, with our genetics, DD will likely have very large "tracts of land" (big boobs for non-Monty Python fans).
I thought of an automatic bad nickname. Did you? Will the kids at school? Steer clear from Ruby?
Re: Predicting bad nicknames...
Boobie / Booby?
LOL that was all I could think of? Now I want to know what you were thinking of?
I forgot to say - I do like the name Ruby though? I know a girl named Ruby and I have always thought it was so cute.
She is small-chested though, so Booby never popped into my head for her.
Yeah, I was thinking "Booby Ruby," and if I recall correctly, I started with the training bras in 5th or 6th grade so maybe we should rethink. Hmmph.
Smelly Kelly is one thing, but puberty is hard enough with bra strap snapping, no need for Booby Ruby.
*sigh*
Nooo. If you love it, go with it! I think it's adorable. And honestly, like I said, I knew a Ruby and that never crossed my mind once with her name. I only thought of Booby just now b/c you eluded to it being chest-related in your original post.
There are SO much worse things kids call each other. Booby Ruby is not that bad.
I think its an awesome name, very cute!
IMO and being a school teacher, if kids are mean enough ( which sadly they can be) they are going to find something to pick on regardless of whether or not the name rhymes with it.
This. I developed breasts early (I'm a DDD now), and was picked on for it, even though my name didn't rhyme. Ruby is a beautiful name, don't ditch it just because of a nickname she might have. Besides, every name has a nickname associated with it. All we can do is try to raise our kids to have a healthy self-esteem. When I developed early, my mother taught me to be proud of my body, and I still am to this day.
like PP kids will come up with nick names regardless..
i use to get Step-on-me which usually caused me to go and stomp their feet..
so i'm sure she'll be able to stand up for herself when she gets there
Honestly, I have to disagree with the majority here. Yes, some kids are mean and can come up with something mean to call a child regardless of whether or not it rhymes with anything, but if YOU can already think of a mean nickname that the kids might use, I think your best bet is to avoid the name.
My friend and I were going through a book of baby names, and I liked the name Garrett. My friend reminded me that red hair runs in both my family and DH's family, so if we had a red-head named Garrett, he'd get called "Carrot" instead. It was enough to make me ditch the name.
I can think of a negative nickname for almost ANY name if I think about it long enough (and we tend to sit there and channel the mind of a 12 year old boy for everysingleoption while we agonize over baby names)
If your daughter develops early or has a big chest in general she IS going to be teased. It's going to happen, no matter what her name is. Even if you name her Jane (Hey Jane, let me be your Tarzan!) or Susan (Whoa, look at the fusans on Susan!) If you name her Anne the boys will probably just call her Annie TaTa.
Know what I mean? Her name isn't going to make it any worse, so give her a beautiful name that will suit her well in the world after high school (when the best things in life happen anyway.) I think Ruby is a beautiful name.
Ruby is a beautiful name, don't avoid it just because there 'could' be a nickname for it.
I was called 'divots' by two boys all 6th grade year. I figured out it was in reference to my chest. I don't know if they thought I was too small or if it was like calling the big guy tiny. I developed early, so who knows. LOL I never have understood a young boy's mind. My point is, boys will be boys and will find something if they are determined too. I never played golf and my name is Jessica, so not even close rhyming-wise.
I wouldn't assume that your kid WILL have one genetic attribute or another.
I come from a lonnnnnng line of large chested (DD, E, F & Larger) women, however I never got any larger than a small B (until now, I'm a full C).
So, I say go with whatever YOU want to name your child, and just remember that YOU are the one who has to say the name over and over for the next 18+ years.
