Fetal Echo due to IVF

Greetings Ladies,

Tomorrow I have a fetal echo to look closely at the 4 chambers of the heart, all the septums and the blood flow.  I have no history of heart defects in my family and my A/S was fine, however, my doctor recommends that all IVF patients get this test due to the slightly higher risk of heart defects.  My insurance covers it so I went along with his recommendation.

For those of you who did IVF, did your doctor recommend a fetal echo?

 Thanks!

  • Yes, I had mine on Friday.  I was happy to have it done since it will make me feel better about things and will most likely be our last u/s until baby is here!
  • I have mine scheduled for this Friday!

  • Not IVF but we are getting one on Friday our only risk factor is that we are having multiples.

  • I didn't have IVF, but because of my the thickened nuchal fold in week 12 my doctor recommended the fetal echo. We did ours during the anatomy scan. It's actually pretty cool, they can listen to each valve of the heart separately, plus listen to the blood flowing through various arteries.
  • Yes, I had one due to IVF. Everything was fine and it was great to see the baby's heart up close.

They recommend fetal heart echo for anyone with a high risk pregnancy. It is pretty expensive, even with insurance, however extra screenings are always optional.  Healthcare services are there to keep us well but they are also a BUSINESS there to make money. There may be pressure from providers to this done, but you are the decision maker for whats best for your family and situation.  There is not ONE way things have to be done. Always ask questions and weigh your options vs risks.
