When my friend was about to go into labor with her DD her doctor actually told her "go home, smoke a joint, and try to relax". I don't know if she did, but her doctor must have thought it would be good for her to get her to relax.

Was her doctor actually a certified doctor? Because if he keeps up with that advice he won't be for much longer.

Yes, he is a well known and certified doctor and is still in practice today.
Her DH had long hair and wore tie dye shirts all the time, so he probably assumed they were pot smokers (which they were). I don't think he is going around telling all his patients to smoke a joint before labor.
I've known plenty of ladies who have smoked pot while pregnant and their babies/kids are just fine. If someone wants to take a toke to cure some morning sickness and be able to have an appetite, who am I to judge?
I think that's pretty irresponsible. There are other FDA approved ways to reduce morning sickness. Drugs bought off of some corner is not one of them. I can't believe that any woman who is about to be a mother would even consider doing that. I still get morning sickness at almost 29 weeks and I would NEVER smoke pot to ease morning sickness or gain an appetite. Edited because autocorrect on my phone blows.
^ I think that the FDA has proved that it is not to be trusted even more so than "street drugs." Do you not see these commercials: "if your baby was born with spina bifoda, cleft palatte, etc.?" Those problems are caused by FDA APPROVED drugs! I've researched multiple medications my doctor has tried to prescribe me that he has deemed "safe to take during pregnancy" and I guarantee you they're much more dangerous and pose a MUCH higher risk than any amount of marijuana. Marijuana is a plant, grown by God. Don't always believe everything you hear, do the research for yourself. If you do, you'll find many things were told to be fact, are really fiction.
Based on the amount of comments in this post and the linked post by clear newbies to this board I have to wonder what pot smoking group they all came from.
Please tell me how you can GUARANTEE that FDA approved drugs are more dangerous than any amount of marijuana. Please. I'm listening.
Based on the fact that you just used the word "newbies" I can deduce that you're not intelligent enough to be posting on threads that require little, if any, thought. Do you know nothing about the birth defects, autism, etc. that are linked with FDA approved vaccinations and prescribed medication? Why do you think the drug administration consists of the wealthiest people in America? Because idiots like you believe that our illnesses and problems can only be cured with man-made CHEMICALS that cause our children to be born with countless birth defects! A staggering 75% of children's mothers born with autism had the Rhogam shot. A shot that I'm sure you know nothing about. And the fact that it only became necessary to recieve the shot in utero in 1984? Think about it. Although I'm sure it'll be a task for you.
Lurking. I would love to see the study where you found that tidbit of knowledge.
I've heard that a certain vaccine can cause autism, so I asked about it at one of my birth classes. The nurse and a pediatrician that were hosting the class said that was false information.
"THANK YOU! I always see these snarky responses and think "really? this are suppose to be help boards so lets try and be helpful!" Glad to know someone else agrees!"
"THANK YOU! I always see these snarky responses and think "really? this are suppose to be help boards so lets try and be helpful!" Glad to know someone else agrees!"
Funny thing is that she said that in response to something that I posted.
I'm fascinated by the whole question. I never would have thought of marijuana as a possible treatment for morning sickness (really who would), but I do live in a state where medical marijuana is legal and now I'm wondering if it's prescribed for this purpose. Doesn't really seem that far fetched considering that the typical use for medical marijuana is the exact same as the on-label use for Zofran (anti-nausea for cancer patients) and I'm guessing that when you go to a medical marijuana shop, you aren't dealing with the same concerns about what else the marijuana may be cut with. I kind of wonder how the 2 compare in terms of potential harmful side effects and such. Of course, mj has the additional concerns of smoke inhalation

Does the doctor have love hair and wear tie dye shirts? I think I have heard of these doctors and they are called witch doctors .
Ahahahahahaha! The morons have coined a term for people who are smart enough to realize and see the damages vaccines are doing to our children! "Anti-Vax!" This is just too much for me.
Continue to be ignorant, I can see that it's hopeless for you, and unfortunately for the children that will be raised to be exactly like you. I pity you, but I can't read anymore. I feel myself becoming less intelligent by the second from reading the stupidity you spew from your mouths.
I think you gotta live what you preach so I sure hope that those people who are all up in arms over marijuana also never inject KNOWN carcinogens (read:hotdogs containing nitrates). Can't have it both ways - unless you are a hypocrite.
FWIW - I don't smoke marijuana or eat hot dogs. And not just because I am pregnant.
Yes, cause smoking pot while a baby is in you is the same as eating a hot dog. Really? One would think there is a full moon tonight. Or are the bright girls only on during the week?
I'm sorry, are you claiming that I am not bright because I do not necessarily agree with you? C'mon now. I've simply pointed out that the shock and horror ought to be fairly spread to things that are known to cause cancer like eating nitrate laced hot dogs.
Do I need a doctorate degree to prove that just because I do not necessarily agree with you does not mean I am not bright? I'm not sure what little bubble you live in in which you believe that those who disagree with you or, more correctly, do not wholeheartedly agree with you, are just plain stupid. That's simply narrow minded. Your ad hominen attack is fallacious and does nothing for your argument.
Yes, I think injesting known carcinogens should cause the same amount of shock and disbelief as marijuana use. And that's all I was pointing out. Because I find that kind of hypocracy odd. And I'll back it up with my doctorate degree, awarded c u m laude, and 35 years of life experience. Only because you insist.
We can disagree and still be bright.

My god there are some galactically stupid women on this board.
Kitty Holland, using fancy words, does not make you come across as being more intelligent than others. If you are going to try to impress, maybe you should make sure that you learn how to spell before bragging about your degree and that you graduated "c u m" laude. Which "c u m" laude, honey? I will take my 34 years of practical life experience of your 35 years stuck in the realistic world of academia anytime.
To the chick with all of those friends that smoked pot while pregnant...who are you to judge? A soon-to-be-mother, that's who. Of course, since these are the people that you hang out with, and birds of a feather flock together, one cannot expect you to be bright enough to know that what they are doing is not okay.
For the rest of us that are bringing up FDA approved drugs, you are right, to a degree. But, at least those drugs are prescribed with a purpose, and there have have clinical trials and tests done to quanitfy and qualify certain risks.
Cloudy- I love that you assume that I am not smart. I love that you assume that I am brainwashed. I think it is sad and pathetic that you are defending something in such a vitriolic way that is bad for babies. But, make sure, at the next festival you go to how all these crazy moms are denying their babies the pleasure that weed gives.
By the way, my cousin runs a medical marijuana shop in Tahoe. I emailed him last night about smoking pot while pregnant. His response was to laugh and then ask if I was serious. When I replied that I was serious, he said that there is no approved use for medical marijuana for pregnant women.

Whether you are a pot smoker or not - if you are for legalization or think pot is of the devil -- there is one fact that has been left out of this discussion.
It's illegal. And I judge the HELL out of a mother for rationalizing engaging in illegal behavior and putting her family at risk in order to get high. As for the ridiculous explanation that it's ok to smoke if you grow it yourself - really? You are actually recommending growing weed in your home as smart?
Our children can be TAKEN AWAY FROM US for stuff like this. Fo real. So if you are smoking pot while pregnant or as a mother, I don't claim to know what that is doing to the baby's health (although I don't understand why anyone would take an unknown risk) - but I do judge you for being an assclown engaging in illegal activity that could have incredible detrimental impact on your family.

I think you just made the best point I've seen. I could debate this one both ways, how something natural is usually better, or how something the FDA has approved is more likely to be safe because it has been tested. Or on the other hand, how just because something is natural does't make it safe, after all some things that grow in the wild are extremely poisonous, or that not everything that the FDA approves has been thoroughly tested, has anyone else here ever heard of thalidomide? It was a morning sickness medication that caused disgustingly large numbers of birth defects that the FDA pushed through. I think that eveyone needs to realise that no matter what you do, you are taking a risk.
But regardless of which side you choose, or which way you see things, because marijuana is illegal, you would need to consider much more than the effects on yours and your childs health. Health is no longer the main consideration here, well being is. And no child is better off with parents who will risk losing their kids.

I was waiting and hoping for someone to bring up this point. Whether or not you agree with the medical benefits of marijuana (I don't, btw)... the fact is, it's illegal. And doing something illegal can land you jail. Landing in jail can lead you to lose custody of your children, or at the very least lead the court system to suddenly thrust itself into your life for a long time. It is just not worth it, IMO.

1. I am not trying to impress anyone - I am defending myself from your personal attacks. You attacked my intelligence due to the fact that I do not wholeheartedly agree with you.
2. FYI, you must write the word c u m this way or else it is censored. Think about it. "***"
3. I don't work in academia. C'mon - you've got to stop with all the assumptions already.
4. It's not illegal where I live. And it's also not universally illegal even in the States (under state and local laws). I know that some places have decriminzaled small amounts of marijuana. But I do agree that this is probably the best argument to flat out avoid marijuana (unless it is prescribed for medicinal use in where that's legal).

2. It's not illegal where I live. Yup, that's right - I live in Holland.
I was with you until you posted about your fancy degree and life experience. That made me eye roll. Having a doctorate degree and being 35 doesn't mean your opinion on an unrelated matter carry any more weight. And generally speaking, flaunting degrees and qualifications takes away from your argument.
Anyway, it doesn't sound lilke you support marijuana use while pregnant. But you equate it with consuming nitrates/nitrites - which you also don't support. So where does it end? Is the bag of unhealthy potato chips I am going to eat be added to the list also? And what if I have a crapload of vitamin C with my hotdog to prevent the forming of nitrosamines from the nitrites - is it ok then? Where do we draw our lines of outrage?
This post is specifically about marijuana, and whether or not it is wise to embibe during pregnancy. I haven't read a compelling enough argument for use. It's effects are questionable, and to me it doesn't make sense to take an unnecessary and unknown risk. And here in the US, it is illegal and that adds a whole other layer of risk that IMO is really fecking stupid to take.

Look, I only pointed out my age and degree to OP who challenged my intelligence because I did not agree with her. I find that insulting and narrow minded. And I do agree that the best argument for not smoking pot is the legality issue.
But my only point is that the shock and outrage expressed over someone maybe thinking about the possibility of smoking pot should probably be on par with those who say "I just ate a hotdog. Hope my baby doesn't have 3 heads lol" or some other remark with 50 or so responses saying something like "Hotdogs are fine. Have another one. Everything in moderation right lol." And there's no outrage. No threats of reporting child endangerment. No one copies post like that from other boards. I simply think there should be the same reaction to hotdogs because just like with marijuana, and just like you say --- it's an unnecessary and unknown risk and with hotdogs, it's not just to your baby. That just makes no sense to me.
And yes, we can't avoid everything that might be dangerous. And yes, it's a slippery slope. But I simply don't understand how hot dogs containing known carcinogens get a free pass. They can't be that delicious, can they?
