so i'm new the cloth diapers. i was going to start from the birth of my child 3 months ago but i was having difficultied BF'ing and put it off for a while. now that we have figured out BF'ing i'm going to try CD'ing. I ordered the $10 trial from Jillians Drawers on Friday so hopefully it will get here monday. but my question is do i need different kinds of CD? i see people have mentioned they have a stash of different kinds, i was just planning to see which ones i liked and have many of the same kind.....is that ok? will i need different kinds? don't know what we will use yet, but i'm a bit confused
Re: new to cloth diapers.
You definitely don't need different kinds.
It's all about what you like. Once you're done the trial, you'll decide what you like. You may like one style, you may like multiple.
For us, pockets make up the majority of our stash. If I HAD to make up my stash of all of one kind, I would choose pockets.
However,
? all-in-ones are easier for my mother-in-law, who babysits once in a while; so we have a few of those.
? all-in-twos are easier for trips because I can use the cover multiple times and just change out the insert, so it takes up less room in our luggage.
? fitteds work best for our tummy-sleeper so we use those for naps to prevent leaks.
So while I may prefer one style over the others, there is a time and place for other styles, hence the diversity of my stash.
You don't need different kinds, but it's good to try out some different ones to see what works. There's no universal CD that will work on every.single.baby, which is why we usually recommend that people do a trial or try different types/brands when they first start out. once you find one that you like, you can stock up on that type/brand.
And your tastes may change. DD was in mostly pockets and a few fitteds and prefolds when she was a nb. For the rest of her first year, I used almost exclusively pockets. Now I use mostly fitteds for naps and nighttime, prefolds for short-term diapering (during a messy breakfast session, for example, or between bath and bed). I also had no wool covers to start and now I have no PUL covers.
Just my 2c.
We have a pretty varied stash. I got sucked in to all the "trends" of fitteds and WAHM AI2s. It's fun having different ones, but definitly not necessary.
BFP #1 11/28/09 ~ EDD 8/6/10 ~ DS Born 8/9/10
BFP #2 8/27/13 ~ EDD 5/8/14 ~ Natural MC 9/18/13 at 6 weeks, 6 days
BFP#3 3/28/14 ~ EDD 12/7/14 ~ DD Born 11/21/14
BFP#4 6/15/17 ~ EDD 2/20/18
I used almost all fitteds for the newborn stage and use almost all pockets now. If we start having leaks, then I might try something else. Otherwise, I'll stick with what works.
I did have some AIOs in newborn for overnight, and I do have some fitteds now (but hardly touch them). A trial is good - you'll see what you like and what fits well.
