Anyone using a Poang chair instead of a glider?

We've been looking for a glider, but I generally don't like the look of them and if we're gonna spend the money I'd rather it be on something we can keep to use in the living room. Unfortunately the really nice ones like that are $400+. So we were thinking of getting a Poang chair from Ikea instead. Anyone else try this?

  • I'm not using a poang chair, but I've always thought they'd make great baby chairs.  The bouncing is very similar to a bouncy, plus they're super comfy for adults.  I'd for sure get the ottoman to go with it though.

  • I actually have one with the ottoman that I can use, but a good friend also gave me a glider.  I'll likely end up using both.  One's in the nursery and one's in the office.  I do love my Poang chair, but they can be a bit difficult to get out of (well...being 9 mos pregnant) which makes me wonder if they'll be hard to get out of with a baby later.  I do love the style of them though.  Did you see though that they also have a rocking chair that's styled like the Poang chair now?  (I love Ikea!)

  • I totally thought about it...until I sat in one again and realized how low they are.

  • I know there is someone on here that has one in their nursery already, they posted their pics on the FB page.

  • I am. I got a poang rocker. The gliders were so expensive, and I'd heard that while some people use theirs all the time and love it, others did not. So we got a poang, which we had wanted anyway, and decided that if I'm doing a lot of rocking and want something more comfy then we can talk about spending the money.

I haven't rocked yet w/LO so I can't tell you how it works for nursing, but it looks cute! LOL

Here's one of my nursery pics.

  • We have a glider but we also have a Poang in our living room.  We spent hours rocking in it with DS - he loved it and it was comfy for us as well.  It is low and more difficult to get out of than a glider, but like anything with a baby, you get used to it and soon don't even think twice about it.

Definitely get the ottoman though as well ... having a place for your feet makes all the difference.

  • Thanks for posting this! I've been pondering the same thing. For those who have used a Poang (who haven't already mentioned), do you mean the non-rocker version? The rocker version is a little more expensive (I'm being cheap, I know, but the whole idea is to save money), and I was wondering if the bounciness of the non-rocker would be as useful. I'm debating between a cheap (either used craiglist or bottom-of-the-line new) glider or the Poang.
  • I got the Poang rocker a few months ago.  We had been looking at gliders, but they were just so ridiculously expensive that we decided to give the Poang a shot first.  I only have the chair, not the footrest, but so far it has been pretty comfy for me to sit in.  If it doesn't end up being comfy enough when baby gets here, well, it wasn't so expensive that I'd feel awful about replacing it (and also I can just stick it in the living room for company or whatever).  But yeah, so far, so good.  :)

edit: sorry, I have the regular poang, not the rocker, just the bouncy one. :)   Also, I would add to be careful when getting out of the chair, because sometimes I lean too far forward and start to tip myself.  But I still like the chair a lot. :)

  • Yes! I am. Just the regular Poang. I moved it from the living room into baby's room and added a Medela footstool that slides underneath the chair when not in use. I'm limited on space in the nursery, since it is also my office. It's the most comfortable chair in our house for me right now!

I tried the Poang rocker at IKEA last weekend, just to see how it compared to the regular chair. I didn't like it. The angle of the rocker makes you sit lower and farther back. I like the bouncing action and the angle of the regular one better.

    Good luck!

  • I'm glad I posted, thanks everyone! I think we will make sure to get either a Poang stool or another footstool. I've had my eye on this nursing stool:

  • We have two Poang chairs that we have in a bonus room and we hardly use them because they are so difficult to get out of (I'm 5'6", DH is 5'8"). Comfy, yes, but still not great to get out of. Because of this, I got a glider (well, was gifted one - Storkcraft ordered from Walmart)...I also like the glider better because the arms are upholstered and I have a feeling that will be more comfy than just plain wood arms.

  • Yes.  We got a glider (Shermag) and a Poang with DS (long story).  I ended up almost exclusively nursing in the Poang and we almost never used the glider.  We still use th Poang for bedtime.  I do have the ottoman (critical IMO) and for the first several months, I did put 1-2 pillows on the back to help keep me a little more upright.  But I loved the fact that it was wider and more reclined than the glider.  I had looked at the really wide Dulatier glider, but wasn't willing to spend that much on it and our house at the time was too small so the Poang was a great fit for us.  We're going to go buy another for DD in another week or two.
  • We're using the regular Poang chair.  We've had it for years and I love it, and we just bought the ottoman to go with it in the nursery.  I sit in it all the time now, have no trouble getting up and out of it.  I know some friends say that theirs tip forwards when the try to get out of it, but when we got home we noticed they didn't put the little black stoppers on the bottom/front to keep it from tipping forwards.  Haven't tried the rocker, but very pleased with the bounce in the regular one.
