Cloth Diapering

Ammonia Help

I've only been cding about a month and noticed yesterday that I already have an ammonia smell. I have an HE washer.  What should I do to get rid of it? Any change I should make in my wash routine- I do a cold wash, no spin with 2 tablesppons of Soft RNG. Then I do a normal cycle with 1 tbl, hot, extra rinse. I air dry anything with pul. I do have soft water.

ETA: I also have Dropps and powdered Tide (original) that could be used if you think a switch up is needed.

Re: Ammonia Help

  • One thing that I used to do was do a rinse and spin cycle before the wash cycle.   But, I would set it on "no-spin", that way the dipes were very saturated with water.  Also, do you have a soak cycle on your washer?    I switched to using my soak cycle and I rarely have ammonia issues.   Check the water on the last rinse of your wash cycle and make sure that the soap residue is out (the water should not feel slimey or have bubbles).   If there is build-up of detergent, you can get ammonia smell from that.

I used to use vinegar in my rinse and it helped, but making sure that the diapers are well rinsed works, too.

It's all trial and error!   GL!

  • Ammonia is often caused by detergent buildup....and it seems like you're using quite a bit.  Especially for having soft water which typically needs less to begin with.

First I would do a plain water rinse strip.  Don't add anything.  Just do several hot wash cycles.  Some say until there are no longer any bubbles, but in my case I rarely had bubbles even though there was still soap trapped in the diapers, so I just rinsed a lot.

Then I would stop adding the soap in the prewash.  Only use detergent in your hot water cycle.  It may take some trial and error, but find out the least amount of soap you can use while still getting clean diapers.  I decreased the amount by 1/2 a T each time until I found the "magic" amount.  When it comes to Cds, less is more!

Good luck!  Ammonia is the worst!  I dealt with it for.ev.er before finding a solution that worked!  Also, while this might not be the case for you, I eventually swtiched from Rockin Green to powdered Tide to get rid of the stink.

  • I have been dealing with it too lately, especially with my overnight diapers. I use Tide and also have a FL HE washer. I used to to do a cold rinse no spin before my hot wsah with detergent and 2 cold rinses. What I started doing was a hot soak with detergent. i let it soak for as long as possible (usually several hours or overnight). Then i do my hot wash with extra rinses (I dont add more detergent since I already put it in the soak).

  • Thanks guys! Tonight I did a cold wash with detergent, no spin and a couple drops of dawn. Then I did 2  heavy duty cycles, hot, no detergent and in the first one I also added a large pot of hot water to it. I will start poking around with my routine with everyones suggestions.
