Infertility

OOP Financing Question

For those of you who are out of pocket with your fertility treatments, how have you gone about financing it?  Right now we're starting with IUI's and have some money saved, but were going to put this rest on a credit card.  I have an HSA, but started it before I knew we would need fertility treatments, so I didn't contribute enough this year to put towards treatments.

I didn't know if there was a better way to go about it-loans, ect (particularly if we get to the IVF costs)

Thanks!

Re: OOP Financing Question

  • I got a signature loan through my credit union. I looked at doing those medical financing loans but the rates were higher.

Our cars were almost paid off, so we refinanced them and pulled out the "equity". I am happy we were able to do this, because the interest rate is much, much lower than the signature loan we looked into.

I used my flexible spending card for our first round of IVF meds. For IVF#2.2 I am going to have to pull out my credit card to pay for my meds.

  • We got a home equity line.  There are some great deals right now (no fees, low interest rates, etc) and the interest can be written off on taxes. However, we did put it on a cc that we paid off at the end of the month so that we also got the points.  We plan to pay down as much as the line of credit as we can with our tax return.

  • Fortunately for me my husband just recently changed jobs so I got to make changes to my benefits.  We were able to max out our flex spending.  We also used a convenience check from one of our credit cards for 0% for a year.  The rest of the balance is going on that.  We plan to put our tax return towards the balance.

    Good luck!!
