Painting kitchen cabinets.. DIYers come in.

Our cabinets look like the top left of this pic....medium oak - standard builder, grade, I assume.

I'd like to paint them soon (which means 1-2 yrs at our rate).. but I worry with the Oak woodgrain it may not look great.  Is this something I should just forget and add new cabinets to the list of project?

I am ignorant when it comes to wood/refinishing furniture.

  • There have been lots of post about this on decorating and renovating. A bunch of ladies have use the Rustoleum cabinet stuff, and the difference has been amazing. I would ask over there.

  • I painted our bathroom cabinets that looked like that in our old house.  I sanded them first and then painted.  They turned out great!

  • If you can get away with painting them, do it!  Cabinets are sooo expensive.  We have the smallest kitchen in the world, and to get new Kraftmaids I was told it will be at least $8000.  This is without any fancy accessories with them, like pull outs(except for a pantry cab.)
  • My cabinets that I painted in my laundry room were oak and didn't look as nice as those in  your pic.  The oak grain was really loud.  I painted them and they look great.  A good primer, quality paint, sanding a little and a foam roller and brush make all the difference.

Here they are before and after:

  • Our cabinets looked awful--they were 70s era dark wood.  They were so hideous!  I removed the doors, sanded them, primed, and then painted them. I got the paint from Ben. Moore. It was an enamel. They've been painted for 5 years and still look great!  They wash easily and haven't chipped at all.  I spray painted the hinges silver and then put new handles on and they look like new cabinets.  I got the handles from Ikea.

do you have any before/afters? We have DARK wood with bronze//black hardware. I *hate* them. I want to paint them too, but DH thinks it'll look terrible. I need proof that it'll be great. :) It's a tiny kitchen, and so dark in there.... sigh. My own little jail cell.
