Parenting after 35

What would you buy

for a birthday present to a 1 year old? What were the toys that your kids loved when they were 1? My best friend lives in Paris and her son is turning 1 in less then a month. I would like to buy something for him that is not clothes, but it also shouldn't be too bulky since I will have to ship it. Any ideas are appreciated.

Re: What would you buy

  • Do they speak English? one of our favorite gifts B got was the fisher price laugh n learn singing teapot set.  kind of girly... but she still plays with it daily!  sings songs...is the cutest thing.

ANY of the "laugh n learn" toys would be great! well... if they speak English...

Also... musical instruments are also great gifts... little tikes drum... maracas...cute.

  • My son loves his Leap Frog phonics bus. Carries it around everywhere!

  • Trains.  Anything remotely related to trains.  Train books.  Train songs.  Train toothbrushes.  Train toys.

He might not be into them at 1 year, but wait until he's 22 months old and he catches one little glimpse of Thomas the Tank Engine.

(Can you tell my kid is obsessed???)

  • DS still likes his Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes and he's just getting in to his Melissa and Doug nesting blocks

I want to get DS a bath toy like the foam letters or this toy

Books!  Especially English ones, as they may be harder to find in Paris.  DS favorite book at this age was , "Shiver me letters, a pirate ABCs".  Half-Price does sell new books as well, plus they ship great!

Also, the Yooukiddo bath toy would be super fun.  My parents bought a similar version for DD for Xmas, we just took it out recently, and both kids are learning to share the toys  in the tub, as they both love it.  If you buy, send batteries as well.

  • Thanks all for the ideas. I think that I will go with one of the laugh and learn toys. I was reluctant to do so because of the English, but if I think about it, no harm in being tri-lingual. His mom is as well:) And OMG, it is fun looking for toys on amazon (spent hours...). Can't wait for Ian to grow a little older for all those fun toys.

  • I think a stash of English speaking books or some English Leapfrog toys would be awesome!
  • We are getting our DD a Ybike Pewi as a push toy/riding toy she can push now and grow into over the next couple of years. It is pretty small when sent and takes just a little bit of time (less than 30 minutes) to put together. We have friends who have one and their LO loves it.
