Ian doesn't drink much. Pretty much none at all. We've tried in the sippy cup and the bottle numerous times and he just skrunches his nose and pushes it away every time. Thankfully we have not had a hot summer so he has never gotten dehydrated or anything, but I'd still like him to drink more. Got any ideas?
Re: How much water does your 9 month old drink?
We don't do juice generally, but if you are really worried about hydration, you could mix some juice with water and see how he does, even diluting it 1:4 or 1:6 would still give a little flavour or sweetness to the water.
We started water in the sippy cup around 7 months old and she didn't take to it at all. But now she is starting to drink it more and more. When I say more,t is just some sips here and there. I would say she drinks about 1 oz. a day. Every little bit counts!
I say try some juice. He may like that better! He takes a few swigs out of his sippy cup after every meal. Maybe an oz after each meal?
If we put it in his bottle, he'd suck down whatever was in there.

From what I have read, you should probably decrease the water intake somewhat. I read that if they drink a lot of water under 1 year, they won't get enough milk/FF and lose those nutrients. Also something about electrolyte imbalance? I am no pedi of course, just sharing.
Just keep offering it during meals and eventually your LO will figure it out. I think DS finally figured out how to drink water from a sippy when he was around 10.5 months old. We are now struggling with drinking milk from the sippy, since it is a little thicker than water... Figures. GL!
I think you are kind of mixing apples and oranges here... Just because a baby drinks a lot of water, doesn't necessarily mean s/he's not having enough milk/formula/food or nutrients.
DS, for example, drinks 24 oz of formula a day + 5-10 oz of water. That is certainly enough formula and I very much doubt that the water is reducing his capacity for absorbing nutrients.
Another factor to consider is where you live and how hot it is. We live in a very hot country and it has been in the 90s for over three months now. DS sweats constantly (even in the a/c) so he needs a LOT of water.
I should have said it is possible they won't get enough formula/breastmilk. I read that babies can feel full if they drink too much water and won't take in as much milk. Obviously that is not always the case and there are other things to consider. 14 oz of water is a lot for a 9 month old though. My pedi didn't even say our LO needs to drink water and it is hot here. She said if she is constipated to give her a couple of tablespoons. We offer water with every meal because of constipation issues.
Kellymom also says water is not necessary even in hot climates for a breastfed baby. It also says 2 oz in 24 hours. I don't know about formula babies.
Maybe it's a cultural thing. The doctors, daycares and parents here all push water like crazy. I forgot DS's water bottle once and three of the daycare women lectured me about it! Maybe it has to do with the humidity more than the heat, because like I said, DS is constantly sweaty! He sleeps with a fan on him and wears only a diaper, and still wakes up sweaty sometimes, and his clothes are drenched if we're out of the a/c for five minutes.
Also, you are probably right about the breastfeeding thing. I think it's very different than formula feeding, because babies get their nutrients and hydration that way, whereas formula-fed babies get what they're given, so-to-speak.
Sorry wasn't paying attention to this thread. I did ask my pedi (who sucks because it is military but anyways...) and he said it was fine. She nurses 2x a day and drinks 12 - 14 oz of formula a day. Her water intake definitely is not replacing her BM/Formula. He also said that she would need a lot more water to get water poisoning. Also, I probably should have mentioned that she really isn't ingesting the entire amount because a lot of times she drinks it and half dribbles out of her mouth, she just love drinking.
T is also a very sweaty girl, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it too.
