Re: ??? Weekly Check-in ??? 8/18/2011
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 21+ months
(2) Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? nothing really new - he's really into logos for anything - he can name most of the car makes (chevy, toyota, honda) up and down our street and that's so cute. he also knows "dot com" - must be from hearing it on tv - and today he made up his own phrase "ta.com" (ta is pizza) lol
(3) Next appointment date? 2 yr appt in a few months
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? we have a few - sitting in the highchair to eat. He will sit there to drink his milk but then wants to get down immediately after. I bought a cool placemat and lowered his chair to the level th at it will fit up to our table so he can eat there like the rest of us, and that seemed to work for a bit (just tried it last night) - b ut then he decided he wants to try to climb into his high chair by himself. And he is fighting getting his diaper changed at any time, and doesn't seem to be able to get himself settled to go to sleep - we were in bed 2 hrs last night before he fell asleep.
(5) What's your LO's bedtime routine like? When did you start it? started around 5 months with the bath, jammies, books, bed. Added toothbrushing before books a couple months later. Sometimes if he seems really tired, I"ll give him the option of skipping books.
(6) When did you start introducing solids? How did you integrate the solids with your LO's normal bottle feeding or nursing time? we started putting rice in his bottle (per the pedi for the reflux) around 4 months I think. Started baby food around 5 months. hm, I honestly don't remember about the feeding times.
(7) What childbirth classes did you find to be most useful? mine was good because it was offered by the head nurse at our practice and gave a lot of specific information about how our dr's would react to certain situations and what to expect. I think a breastfeeding class would have been enormously helpful for us too, since what was covered in our class wasn't detailed enough.
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?Hyperemesis like last pg except it started earlier and the Zofran isn't working as well as before. Turns out my last period wasn't accurate for EDD b/c my period was irregular & I was still BFing, so baby is ~2wks earlier than I had originally thought. B is doing well, picking up a lot of new words.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?Today for IV infusion.
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?Definitely the hyperemesis, esp coupled with a toddler to take care of--but my mom and MH has been doing A TON (almost everything) which helps a lot.
(5) What's your LO's bedtime routine like? When did you start it?Bath, diaper + pajamas, bedtime story (3 books), snuggle (in place of nursing time when we were still nursing), then crib. We start immediately after dinner.
(6) When did you start introducing solids? How did you integrate the solids with your LO's normal bottle feeding or nursing time?About 6.5mo. We EBFed until ~1yr, so we usually nursed first, then gave him solids .5-1hr later. Around 11mo, we started to do solids first (since LO was underweight and dropped 2 curves) for lunch and dinner but it didn't seem to help his weight much regardless.
(7) What childbirth classes did you find to be most useful?I only took the CPR one before LO was born, which I thought was good. I wished I had taken a BFing class because I didn't realize how hard it would be but I guess I don't know how good the class would've been?--although the nurse who helped during the delivery almost reprimanded me for not taking a BFing class when I asked her how to BF after delivery =P I did take a free BFing session in the hospital the day after LO was born though--it was nice that they offered that--it helped a lot.
(8) What other questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins?
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 13 months on Monday
(2) Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Not much. He's sooooo close to talking more, I think. He's babbling so much. Sometimes I wonder if I'm not giving him enough credit, maybe he's saying more than I think. I think I've determined that "na--na" is food. Everytime he gets in the high chair he says "na-na, na-na" over and over. Maybe he's trying to say "num-num?"
(3) Next appointment date? Oooh, I still have to make a 15-month appt. I like to make them early to get a good time.
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? We HAD been having a really rough week with me back to work full-time. But today was awesome! He hardly cried when I left, and his teachers told me he had a great day....smiling a lot. What a relief!
(5) What's your LO's bedtime routine like? When did you start it? We started at about 3 months with bath, pjs, bottle, book, bed. Currently the bedtime bottle is the only one he gets, but I'm thinking of trying to drop it soon.
(6) When did you start introducing solids? How did you integrate the solids with your LO's normal bottle feeding or nursing time? We started right at 4 months. I had originally planned to wait a bit more, but he was sooooo ready. He had rice cereal, then a few weeks later tried sweet potatoes, zucchini, and peas.
(7) What childbirth classes did you find to be most useful? Honestly, none of them were really all that useful. I guess the regular childbirth class to be the most helpful, though mostly because we made good friends with another couple there! The BF class only went over positions, which was nice, but didn't really prepare me for the difficulties of BFing. The CPR and safety class would be great for someone who had never taken it, but I have to take it every year for my job. The newborn care class was a joke. I grew up with babies, and I knew everything they talked about (basic how to change a diaper, etc.)
H's recent haircut:
haha this is so cute/funny! I would never think to teach the different car models but that's so fun!
we have the svan high chair so there is a solid step (the foot rest) and this past week she climbed up onto it and got herself into her high chair by herself and I got all excited I told the babysitter, and she said, "oh! she's been climbing up there by herself for months now! she hasn't been doing that with you, too?!" LOL
obviously if it isn't safe with your chair then I wouldn't encourage it but if it's something you can allow him to do while you are standing close by to catch him if he stumbles a little bit, then I would go ahead and let him do it....it will make him feel like a big boy

(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?she is now consistently playing by herself/laying there quietly in the mornings when she wakes up so I no longer have to wake up at the same time as her anymore this is AMAZING b/c it means I get to "sleep in" until about 8am most days now, and sometimes later if I am lucky....after a certain point she gets bored and starts calling for me and that is when I go get her. on the days I work I still only have to get up at 8am since I don't have to be there until 9am. this has made a huge difference for me, being able to "sleep in" a little bit more she seems to finally understand when she is wet. she still (unfortunately) only seems to care somewhat but she will sometimes say "pee pee" now and I'll find that her trainers are wet. Or, she will come up to me and say "off! off!" and want to take them off b/c they are wet. however, the vast majority of the time she doesn't seem to care when she is wet. we'll have some days where she is only wet once (not counting in the morning or after naps) and other days where she is wet 2-4 times. still, i think that her understanding of urination is improving which means we are hopefully one step closer to being potty trained (yay!)she's really into pretend play now which is kind of cool... she loves to go "shopping" around the room and will pick up various things and put them into a mini hand bag we have for her. she also LOVES her play kitchen now and will take things in/out, turn the knobs, etc. the cutest thing she does is she will cook eggs on a skillet on the stove and season them with salt/pepper and then want to feed us the eggs I'm glad we didn't wait until her 2nd bday to get the kitchen b/c she is really getting a lot of good use out of it right now.she's also really into singing songs and nursery rhymes now. she's sing stuff like "humpty dumpty sat on wall, humpty dumpty great fall...woah!" or "ring rosies, pocket posies, ashes ashes, fall down!" and "raining, pouring, old man snoring" LOL
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?2 yrs
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?tantrums/time outs, still. it's a constant struggle and hard to maintain my patience sometimes.
(5) What's your LO's bedtime routine like? When did you start it?after dinner we go straight to the potty and she usually pees/poops. then we do bath time and she "brushes" her teeth w/a real toothbrush and a teeny bit of toothpaste. we then potty and she pees again. then we do bedtime books or puzzles while she continues to snack and drink more milk. we then potty one last time (she always has to go again b/c she drinks so much milk after dinner) and then I brush her teeth again - this time with a washcloth to make sure we get all the nooks and crannies! then we have about 5 min of snuggle time and I put her in the crib w/her seahorse and she'll usually fall asleep within 5-15 min.I can't remember when we started, but I know I did a similar version of this (still with potty time but obviously not w/her brushing her own teeth) starting from a pretty young age - maybe 3-4 months?
(6) When did you start introducing solids? How did you integrate the solids with your LO's normal bottle feeding or nursing time?right after 6 months. I always nursed first and then immediately fed solids (instead of waiting 0.5-1hr), even when she was eating a larger amt of solids b/c we were (and still are) nursing. she tends to not drink much milk at breakfast, and I think that is probably b/c she is still nursing when she first wakes up
(7) What childbirth classes did you find to be most useful?I didn't take any but wish I had taken a BFing class - I had no idea it was going to be so hard.

He actually picked up toyota on his own from TV, and everytime we walked past one outside, he would say it, so I started teaching him the names of the other cars, lol.
I would have to lock the wheels, but even then, I'm not sure b/c it's not up against something.
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
18 months 4 weeks old and 18.5 weeks pregnant
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
Feeling good. We've got some exiciting things happen this week, God willing!
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
Big u/s scheduled for 09/16
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?
Clingy, velcro child! Sometimes I cannot walk across the room without her wigging out! Exhausting, but I guess it's separation anxiety which I've read peaks around 18 months.
(5) What's your LO's bedtime routine like? When did you start it?
Bath, brush teeth/hair, soft music and low lighting in the nursery diaper, lotion, PJs, then 3 books, lights out (night light/Twilight Turtle on), sound machine (set to ocean), rock/snuggle then into the crib. Then whole thing (including bath) takes about 30 minutes or so.
(6) When did you start introducing solids? How did you integrate the solids with your LO's normal bottle feeding or nursing time?
We did BLW starting at 6 months. I always nursed first about 30 minutes prior to the meal. We started with just lunch at 6 months, then added breakfast around 8 months and went to 3 meals/day around 1 year. She was still nursing 5-6x at 12 months...as that scaled back we added in 1 snack between lunch and dinner and now that she's weaned we sometimes have two snacks in addition to the three meals (depends upon the day and her activity level). Snacks are typically fruit (fresh or dried), cheese or milk, and sometimes a cracker or two.
(7) What childbirth classes did you find to be most useful?
We did Bradley Birth and enjoyed it. I wish I had taken a BFing class. This time we plan to do the sibling class with Libby.

(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Like Miss A, J is really enjoying pretend play. I'm glad he got his kitchen early too. He likes to mimic me and stir and prepare food. He "cooks" what he picks from the garden too.He also likes putting his stuffed animals and dolls to bed. He gives them a drink of water, offers a paci (he has one doll that has one that sticks b/c of a magnet), covers them up, and pats them while saying "nigh night, ok, nigh nigh."
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? 18mo appt this week. Seems like it has been forever since he was last there.
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? OOT visitors, it's a struggle to keep J on a schedule and the HOT weather w/out A/C.
(5) What's your LO's bedtime routine like? When did you start it? no real routine. We read books after dinner and then put him in PJs at about 7 and he goes to bed. After about age 1 he has went to bed on his own w/out a struggle. Before that I would nurse him and then DH would lay with him in our bed until he went to sleep.
(6) When did you start introducing solids? How did you integrate the solids with your LO's normal bottle feeding or nursing time? a little before 6mo. BF first then he would just gnaw on table food with us. At school there was a few months when I didn't try to explain BLW so I sent in plum organics pouches. Once we was good at self feeding I sent in sticks and bite sized stuff.
(7) What childbirth classes did you find to be most useful? we attended a BF class and a childbirth class (no specific med free focus - more helpful info re: interventions etc).
