Best Baby Carrier?

What carrier is most user-friendly and best in the first few months?  I anticipate a lot of baby carrying in the early days!!  Thanks for your help!!

Re: Best Baby Carrier?

  • Curious to hear the answers...I have the Moby (although I did not get it to use it early on..maybe about 4 months in) which I LOVE! I also have the Dr Sears Balboa Baby sling...was never 100% confident using it...it worked and DS seemed to enjoy it...I was worried about is he in there right, is he breathing, will he slide out.

  • I used the Moby from the beginning with DS and loved it. Takes a few goes to get the hang of it but it's great and so comfy to wear.

  • Moby from birth to approx. 4 months. Then Ergo.

  • Is the Ergo similar/the same as a Baby Bjorn??

This. PP, the Ergo is SO much more comfortable than the Baby Bjorn.

And it's better for the baby than the Bjorn: The Ergo holds them in a seated position so there is less pressure on the pelvis.

I love the Sleepy Wrap for a newborn (I personally prefer it over Moby because of the fabric type) and the Ergo for infant-toddler. I also have a ring sling (Hava Sling) that I use when I want something fast - it also gives baby a bit more movement and reach than the other two carriers.

  • The ergo, it's super comfy and I carry my LO on my back in it all the time now.

  • I have a moby but I don't like using it. I recently got a becco butterfly II and I'm pretty happy with it. It is similar to the ergo but has a built in infant insert so it can be used from birth. Also, Ive read that it fits a smaller frame better than the ergo does sometimes.

  • My favorite baby carrier overall is the Ergo.  I like the ease of use, how it has such a high weight limit, and great back and shoulder support.  My 9 month old is about 25 pounds and I have to wear him to go grocery shopping (my 2 year old is in the cart).  WIth the Ergo, I am comfortable.

Unfortunately, Ergos aren't really designed for itsy bitsy babies (there is a newborn insert which I cannot comment on).  For the early days I have a Moby and a Hotsling and a Bjorn.

I thought that I would use my Moby a ton last winter when my DS was born.  But with a toddler running around, I never had time (and maybe I wasn't good at it) to tie the dang thing.  I needed something quick and easy so I used the Bjorn more than anything.  Funny thing, one of my good friends who has a 6 week old said the same thing at breakfast yesterday.  She said that she bought a Moby thinking she would use it all the time and has been almost exclusively using her Bjorn instead.  I guess the idea of using a fabric sling and spending time with different "carries" is a little harder when you have a needy toddler :).

If you can only get one carrier I would get an Ergo and do the newborn insert.

  • I love the bjorn. So quick and easy to use, comfy for baby. I dont buy the hype that they're "bad" for babies like some suggest. There's no legitimate research out there that shows this. Its a reliable product thats been on the market for 40 years.

If you're planning on wearing baby 10 hours a day, I'd probably make the investment for a more expensive carrier. I got the bjorn sport (the one with extra lumbar support) at a consignment store, new in box, for $20. DD is about 16lbs now and it is still so comfy to wear. It definitely depends on your babywearing needs. I had a moby and hated it. Such a pain to wrap and I could never get a fit that I felt was comfy.

  • the Bjorn sucks imo. stiff & my back hurt like whoa.

the Baby K'Tan was my go to this time around. super easy & not a PITA like the Moby.

after the K'Tan- the Ergo Sport.

  • I have a Moby, Ergo, Beco and Bjorn. Bjorn was only good when DS was an itty-bitty, then it hurt like hell to use. Moby was great for the first couple of months, then DS got too big and too hot. After that, it was the Beco and Ergo all the way.

So, in short, for the first couple of months, I'd get a Moby or similar stretchy-wrap. Then, get a SSC.

  • Itty bitty newborn phase: Moby

As soon as they can hold their head up: Ergo

I have a Bjorn, Ergo, and Moby. I got the Bjorn before #1 was born and never really got into using it. DS always seemed uncomfortable and it hurt my back. I ended up getting an Ergo. DS liked that better and it was easier on my back, but he's always been a really big kid and I think he was past the stage of getting use to being in a carrier. My friend loaned me the Moby when #2 was born. DD LOVED it when she was a newborn. I haven't tried to wear her in in recently because I can't wrap it quickly and she already weights 17/5lbs at less than  months old. Now that she can hold her head up I love the Ergo. It's incredibly fast and easy to get her snapped on.I do have the infant insert for the Ergo but I preferred the Moby over the Ergo with insert.

I think the Beco is exactly like the Ergo except that you can wear your LO facing out.  I didn't learn that until after I purchased my Ergo, and I wish the Ergo had that feature.

I LOVE my k'tan and want to get a k'tan breeze for next summer.  I have the Ergo and J just isn't a fan, but I'm hoping to try back carrying for him again soon.  He just never cared to be facing inward.   I used the Moby and the K'tan all summer (he's 21lbs)

I have the newborn insert for the Ergo and it was great for times like church when I just needed him not to be bothered and sleep, but other than that I felt it was very bulky and hot.  I would definitely recommend a wrap for a newborn over the infant insert.

  • Catbird baby Pikkolo or the Beco Gemini!  All the perks of an ergo but babies can face forward too!

I loved this chart to compare carriers:
