Single Parents

quick question :)

Hello ladies!

I am just visiting, but I had a quick question. A close friend of mine recently left her SO. She is pursuing going to court for custody rights, child support, and everything in between.  She found out tonight that she is going to have t move out of her apartment. She is a fulltime employee making on $8 an hour AND a fulltime student.

I'm trying to help her find a job that pays more than that. She has her AA and she is continuing her education, but it's tough to find work that works around her schedule. Any ideas on something that would work for daycare and inbetween school?

I'm trying to help her realize that she will be okay on her own. She has this whole complex that she is a failure. :( I CANNOT let her feel like that.

Thanks so much.

Re: quick question :)

  • You are a good friend to be supporting her so much.

I am in a similar boat, and am still trying to figure out the answer.

  • Thanks, I hope you have someone there for you too. I hurt for her.

:( I wish you the best and hopefully others will comment and then we can both find an answer. :)

  • I am going thru the same thing...DH and I have been talking about custady and court were trying to be civil about the divorce and tryign to work together. I am currently trying to look for a place for DS and me. I have a job but I hope I can cut it on 14 an hour with DS and me and a place of our own.

  • I drove a School Bus.  They installed seatbelts for the car seats for my kids. Who were 9 mnths and 3 when I started.  I was able to go to school full time and finish my degree, make $17/hr  about 24-30 hrs a week.

I did that for 5 years and I finished degree and moved on but it was great to be able to work and not have the daycare expenses. (my university had a daycare on site and the children were able to go to that and it was covered by my grants)

  • If she has a family member or friend who can let her live with them that would make things much easier. I second applying for any and all financial aid she can (WIC, food stamps, Section 8, Medicaid, daycare assistance). Sometimes you just have to use these resources to get by till you are on your feet. That's what her tax dollars are paying for.
