Help- Newborn sweating during sleep

My son is one week old today. For the last two days, every time he wakes up there is a wet spot on the sheet underneath him. We've ruled out urine- the diapers are dry in the back. He is sweating through his clothes and through his lightweight swaddle blanket. We've tried removing his balnket and having him sleep in just his diaper, and nothing helps. He has a ceiling fan going in his room and it's at a comfortable temperature. We had a waterproof mattress pad in the crib and took it out, thinking maybe it was trapping the heat and that didn't change anything either. The pool of sweat is anywhere from small to roughly the size of his whole body.

We're going to put in a call to the pediatrician but I wanted to ask here in the meantime to see if anyone else has experienced this. I have tried to research it on Google and I am just terrified by all the info on a higher SIDS risk that I'm finding.

Re: Help- Newborn sweating during sleep

  • sorry i have no sugestions about the sweating, but i wanted to tell you don't belive google!!! i no longer look up symptoms on google, cause i will always find scary things and freak out. i'm sure hes fine, but yeah call you're pediatrician. i'm sure you'll feel better after.i'm assuming he isn't running a fever?

  • Call your pediatritian and relax.

I would make sure what he is wearing isn't too heavy and that he doesn't have a fever.  Is he sleeping in a hat?  Maybe take his socks off?  If he is already just sleeping in a cotton onesie with no swaddle and still sweating (assuming the room is temperature controlled) I am at a loss...

  • DD sweated a ton as a newborn.  Now, at almost 12 weeks, she only sweats when she's in her car seat (which totally makes sense considering the heat!).  She would also wake up with a sweat-soaked back and crib sheet and her hair matted to her head, even when we kept the temperature low and just put her in a cotton onesie.  You can definitely mention it to your pediatrician, but just know that babies can be really hot-natured and grow out of it.  :)

  • I wouldn't be too worried. Sometimes I swear my kid even though she's happy as can be has a fever, because she's hot.

She gets really hot in her carseat and when someone holds her. I overdressed her at first for sleeping and she'd wake up screaming becuase she was so warm.

Now I keep the window in her room cracked and strip her down to a onesie. No socks, no hat, no extras.

If she's otherwise fine, some babies are just hot.

  • Just got back home from a quick visit to the on-call doctor. He checked DS out and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary, and didn't think any further testing would be necessary. So we'll just keep an eye on him!

  • We had the exact same thing happen to our newborn when he was around 2 weeks old. We freaked out and called the nurse line. They had us take his temp and it was normal. We also took him to the ped. and he checked out fine. The doctor said that his own daughter sweat through her clothes at night also and it was completely normal. The sweating for our son only lasted one week, so hang in there!
