Help me choose...

For our entry area.....to store hats/gloves/just for looks.  We have a closet, but the entry area is bor-ring.  I have a few framed pics in black frames.

A bookshelf like this: (with baskets or some type of container)

Bookcase - Anna Collection Antique Black Finish

Or a cabinet like this:

Bookshelf is 34" tall, cabinet is 39" tall.

  • I really like the shelf you posted!  Very pretty!  Where is it from?

I have a cheap/ugly bookshelf with 3 shelves at our door that each child has a basket to put their shoes in on the bottom shelf.  In then winter I bring out the basket they put their gloves/hats etc in on the 2nd shelf.  Then on the top they have coloring books etc.  I would love to find something pretty to replace the other one with so I can move the ugly one to the play area for craft/homework items.

It is on Amazon.....only $90 but $40 shipping.  I wouldn't spend that (in shipping), so I'm just going to look for something similar.

  • I'm looking for something for our entry, too.

I voted for the bookshelf because I think baskets would be easier for kids to keep organized than cupboards.

I'm thinking about something like these for ours:

nice for a small spacewith hooks above it for coats

This is a repurposed sideboard and I love the idea of a bench to sit and put shoes on:

    Repurposed sideboard

Two bookcases ($34.99) anchor this makeover. The baseboard wrapping the base creates a custom-built look. For extra storage, divide the bottom units to create cubbies for shoes.

(this is two cheapie bookcases with a bench built between with cabinet doors.  LOVE.)

  • Mama - I LOVE those - esp the last one. Unfortunately, I only have about 36" of wall space to work with, and if it's taller than 41", only about 30" width due to the light switch. Our stairs, hall, family room, and hall closet are all off that area.

I was looking at one like the first one you posted, with a shelf across the bottom, but it was right at 36", so it would be snug.

Also, I worry about the 'mess' in the baskets.  I'd want the baskets to be nearly as tall as the shelf so you can't really see inside....which is what is appealing about the cabinet-type.

  • What is your price range?

  • We have this inside our front door:

And no, our house is not normally this tidy, LOL. Since then we've added hooks on the wall to the left of the hutch thingie for coats and bags. The hutch is nice because we can hide gloves, hats, scarves, umbrellas, dog leashes, etc. in the drawers. There are baskets on the shelves for keys and cell phones, a place to stack mail, and other little things.

Best part about it? $50 on Craigslist!

That's pretty much what I ultimately want.  I've been watching CL like a freakin' hawk for about 2 months now, and have found NOTHING.  Well, I've found a few $300 "foyer tables" with wrought iron legs and marble tops (ya know the 1/2 circle ones?).

My budget is pretty flexible....I want to stay under $150...but its relative to what it is (more for a hutch-type, less for a plain bookshelf).

Inside our back door we have  an area where we have two rows of hooks (one low that the kids can do independently), so we don't need hooks of any type.

I've even thought about just some sort of dresser....like the slimmer chest-style. ::::sigh::::
