This new love for screaming sucks

H discovered screaming a few weeks ago. Not when anything is wrong, just screaming to scream. Mostly in the afternoon/evening, but really when the mood strikes, she just opens her mouth and hollers. Often it's when she's excited or happy. Usually we just go get the ear plugs but we've each had our fair share of screaming directly in our ears.

I don't want to stifle any vocalizing where speech development is concerned (not that i'd know how to make her stop anyway), but at this rate mama's gonna need a set of hearing aids by Christmas! Please tell me this is a phase that will end soon?!

  • No advice, but I am dreading that stage. All three of my nieces/nephews went through it and it sucked. Hope it passes quickly or you figure out a way to make it stop.

  • Yes it does.  When DD discovered her voice, and the various pitches it could produce, she was very enthusiastic about sharing it for a few weeks and then redirected that enthusiasm elsewhere.  DS found his voice a few weeks ago, and then grew bored of screaming and started babbling a lot more within a few days.  Of course this is a re-occurring phenomenon, I probably spent two months when DD was a year and a half teaching her about inside versus outside voices.
  • It comes and goes. When DD first discovered her voice, she did the screaming for a short while but then stopped. That's the good news. The bad news is that it occasionally comes back. Last night at dinner she was doing a very high pitched scream (now reaching into her upper ranges) and she wouldn't stop so she got at time out. I'm bracing myself because with two little girls, I believe I'll be dealing with quite a bit of screaming over the next 18 years.

  • aw, she's discovered her voice! yes, it will pass but as others have said, it'll come back.

DD is 34mo and screaming is a daily ritual. Screaming into DS' face leads to timeouts and his screaming/crying.

  • We're in this phase, too. Ack!
  • It definitely comes and goes.  I think they find new vocal chords/ranges and just want to exercise their right to see how we react to them.
