*Myra*

I don't know if you will see my reply in the hospital post below, but it is 100% right. No children, siblings or not, under the age of 12 are allowed at AMC during 'flu' season, which runs Sept-May. Finn didn't meet Lila until we brought her home. Anjli and Margaret told me we could arrange a 'meeting' by the elevators outside of the waiting room as we came up from the delivery floor to the recovery floor but I didn't want to do that. They are very strict about it and kicked out a mom who had her 10 year old son with her on our hospital tour. There is a push to get it changed but the Tenet hospitals (AMC and N Fulton) have this rule.

Re: *Myra*

  • Oh, and on another message board I am on someone was questioning the absurdity of this and asked Dr B and this was his reply:

Regarding the visitation policy, I'm it's set by the Neonatologist/NICU team. We've discussed how restrictive (or outrageous) it is. Mind you these are the same group that think patients on Mag Sulfate shouldn't breast feed (contradicting their own Academy of Pediatric recommendations).

The visitation policy is supposed to also be in alignement with other Tenet Hospitals, which means the ability to reverse it will take patient complaints. And many of them.

  • That's fecking crazy. Seriously. What are they going to do with a mother in labor that shows up with a kid and no child care? Stick 'em in the waiting room?! Put them with a nurse?!!! Seeing as how it's AMC, I'm sure it happens pretty frequently. What the hell is Grady's policy, eh?

I really don't understand how that's a sustainable model. Not to mention, the AMC website says nothing about limiting sibling visits in L&D. If this is really the case, I smell a public relations disaster.

I wonder if a call to local media might get some movement. I still have contacts from my journalist days and I know several folks high up in local PR agencies that would loooooove to get a piece of this.

  • Have you been on a tour yet? They have signs all over the place stating this as policy, but they may not be up now since it is summer. I can promise you I am not making this up, it is completely their policy. I am sure they are not the only hospital that is like this actually.

  • DH travels through all the hospitals in the metro area for his job and said the Tenet hospitals are the absolute worst about granting access. They actually require him to have a flu shot (with documentation) before he's allowed in to collect donations for his multi-million dollar, national non-profit. And he's going nowhere near critical care units - mostly on their loading docks and near their materials handling facilities.

He said North Fulton, South Fulton and AMC are awful and are clamped down like police states. So, I believe you. He said NO other hospitals in town come close to Tenet for their strict policies.

  • Hopefully you will have your vbac and be out of there in 24 hours! We were out less than 24 hours after Lila was born, so I didn't feel like we were away from Finn too long.

  • Thanks! I sure hope we're in and out. It breaks my heart to think of not seeing G. for a possible 4-day c-section recovery stay. I'd just tell Rob to sneak her in at that point.

Piedmont was also no-children, no-siblings during flu season. Also only grandparents - no extended family.

Geneva was born at Piedmont in April and they let everyone and their brother in to see me. Including my 9-year old cousin!

They must have been extra strict since this was the height of the swine flu crap.  My SIL pitched such. a. fit. about not being able to visit (but I was fine with that!)

  • EB was a December Northside baby and there were no siblings or extended family beyond grandparents allowed and everyone who wanted to enter the floor had their temperature taken before entering.  I personally liked the extra precautions with flu season. I dont need a newborn exposed and the thought of recovering from a c section and having the flu is petrifying.
