I had my triplets last Sunday, 8/7 and started to notice some watery blood coming out of the incision site yesterday ( 8 days later). I called my OB/MFM and was directed to go to the ER. I went and was sent home with some gauze after seeing the OB resident that was there for the birth and 5 day hospital stay. He palpated the incision, but because there was no active bleeding, there wasn't anything to do and was told that this bleeding was quite common and to follow up with my physician as previously scheduled this Friday.
This morning, I had yet another bout of bleeding and of course freaked out, called my doctor to see if I could see him sooner. I ended up seeing him today (after driving an hour to his secondary office) and was told I had a seroma. He drained it and packed it and covered it with gauze. I bled through the packing/gauze before I left the office and it had to be removed and new packing placed!
All 3 of my babies came home with me on day 5, which was a blessing, but quite overwhelming at the same time. DH and I were just getting into the swing of things with feedings/changing/etc (being first time parents) and now this. I'm afraid of bleeding everytime I stand up and move around and worried about getting an infection in the incision. My DH has been fabulous and feels he can do it all by himself, but I feel terrible that I can't do everything I need to/want to for my babies. I even missed their first pediatrician's appointment yesterday because I went to the ER. I feel like crying all the time, but realize that would make 4 babies for my DH to take care of. Has anyone else been through this? Any words of encouragement? TIA!
Re: Seroma after C-section (some gross content & long)
congrats on your triplets! that's great they are so healthy and home!
i'm so sorry you are having a bad time with the healing - i have never heard of that, but can imagine it sucks. I had a lot of health issues after the birth of my first son and it really sucked dealing with that instead of bonding with him... so i feel your pain... but let your DH do as much as he can- and you just take it easy.
my c/s took a long time to heal- it was oozing for WEEKS and my OB had no idea why - it wasn't infected, didn't hurt- but just wasn't sealing up totally. He was about to send me to the wound center at my hospital- when it started to heal up on it's own.
One piece of advice that helped me a lot- and was when it really started to heal- was when I started using the hairdryer to dry it after showers... before that i was afraid to really wash it too much and didn't dry it well enough - it needs to be REALLY dry - which was especially hard having it under a flap of fat in the summer (sweaty!)... so make sure it's really dry.
i hope it starts to heal up for you!!
My mom had an open seroma after her hysterectomy that had to be packed, but it did heal up. I had a seroma the size of a cantaloupe under my c-section scar but it never opened up and it went away on it's own. So hopefully yours does the same
Ditto what Goldie said, I would dry my incision with a blow dryer also and then I would put a panty liner over it just to absorb any extra moisture that would creep up during the day.
congrats on your triplets! that's great they got to come home with you. (well, in spite of your complication - i always said the short NICU time we had definitely had a silver lining.)
i hope you heal up soon, and don't do too much. you need to be healthy to take care of those babies!

My blog * We made the national news!
Just wanted to let you know that I am dealing with the same thing, although it sounds like mine may be a bit smaller than yours. I had my twins 8/6, and freaked out when I saw my incision draining a week later. Called the OB after hours now and my doc said to watch it for signs of infection and call if my temperature spiked. My temperature did go up a little, so I went to the ER the next morning and he came down from L&D to drain it and prescribe antibiotics "just in case".
I am also a little freaked out about moving around even though I don't have any pain. Mine does seem to be getting a *little* bit better every day, but definitely not as much improvement as I thought I would see. I have a follow up scheduled this Friday - do you have a next appointment to put your mind at ease?
Mine always looks better after a shower, and I found that changing the dressing every few hours makes me feel better because it doesn't look quite so bad. Sorry I don't have more advice, just wanted to let you know that you are not alone!
