2nd Trimester

2nd Trimester -- Pregnancy Insomnia

Hi -- I am 22 weeks pregnant and have bad insomnia the past month.  I am lucky to get 4 hours of broken sleep a night.  Has anyone else experienced this and if so how did you manage it???  I'm not just tired I am lethargic, unable to focus or function. I have never had insomnia before pregnancy, I can't go through the rest of my 4 months this way...yikes.  Any feedback is appreciated!

Re: 2nd Trimester -- Pregnancy Insomnia

  • I'm right with you. My doctor told me to get some unisom and I tried it last night for the first time.  Mind you i had insomnia issues before pregnancy and took an ambien once every 2 or so weeks to help.  But the unisom killed me.. I barely slept still and now i feel like i cant function today.  But exactly like you. I'm lucky if i can get so many hours of broken sleep.  I've tried not napping during teh day but that makes me more restless at night.  i just dont konw haha. So if you can find something to help def. share!

  • I am going through the same thing.  It sucks.  I was on medication for sleep for 3 years but stopped as soon as I found out I was preggers.  I had no trouble sleeping at all because I was super tired during my 1st trimester.  Now it's a different story.  I HAVE to take a nap during the day or WATCH OUT!!  lol

    good luck

  • I feel ya too! I had it when I wasn't pregnant and I have it now. I have to work all day and then go home to a very active 2 yo and I need my sleep. I don't have any time to take a nap except on the weekends when my LO goes down. My dr. told me that I could take unisom and take it every night if needed. It really helped me.  I don't have a problem staying asleep, just getting to sleep. So everytime I get up to pee, it would be hard to go back to sleep. But the unisom is working great. I try not to take it daily even though she said it's perfectly fine, but when I have to get up for work, it is more important that I am sleeping rather than taking it daily.  I would give it a try. My first night or two I was groogy in the AM, but now I'm fine.  My other friend takes Benedryl every night to help her sleep. Her dr. said that is fine too. Good luck!

  • I had bad insomnia with DD.  My prior OB did not believe in medication unless medically necessary so I just dealt with it.  Luckily, I did not have a toddler at home at the time.  This time around my new OB suggested I take Unisom a couple of times a week if I need it.  It has helped a lot because if I don't get sleep I start feeling like I have m/s again.  We also got a new bed (a posture pedic)that is a lot more comfortable.  If you don't want to try medication then I would try different sleeping positions/techniques - more pillows, body pillows, try sleeping on the sofa or Lazyboy (that is where I slept from about 27 weeks on with DD because it was the only place I could get a few hours of sleep a night)......

  • I go through waves with it.  I'll not be able to sleep for a couple of weeks and then have a week, maybe two where I only wake up once or twice and for a short period.  My husband was complaining yesterday that he was tired because DD was up at 1:30am.  He asked me if I fell asleep at my desk and I told him I was used to it, that was my life these days...and then yawned a few times.

At least now he kind of gets it.

  • I've not been sleeping either.  I didn't experience this with my first 2 children, however, this one is kicking my ass.  You'd think chasing them around, I'd sleep really well!

What has been working for me:  a luke warm shower at night after kids are asleep, aromatherapy stuff from Bath & Body Works-- the stuff you can spray right on you, and on linens,  bedtime tea, begging my husband to rub my aching back while I'm laying in bed, reading really bad chic lit, and not eating a lot at night has helped.

Now, I am finally sleeping, though it can be a bit restless.

Hope you can get some rest!

I'm glad I checked out this post because I have not had any luck with sleep either.  I can't get comfortable for the life of me!  Whether it be trouble breathing, heart burn, nausea, or just plan can't find a position to fall asleep in - I cannot just fall asleep anymore!!!  I did get a pregnancy pillow that has helped a bit, but not nearly enough....   sometimes I go downstairs and sleep on the couch when I can't take it anymore.  The support of the back of the couch helps - SOMETIMES!  It's so awful.

Anyways, I'm going to talk to my doctor about Unisom and if she gives me the green light, I'm going to go get some for really bad nights.

Sorry I don't have any better advice for you!

  • Body pillows definitely seem to help, but not a whole lot is helping my insomnia these days either. I pretty much consistantly wake up at 2-3AM and can't get back to sleep....don't know that it's the best plan, but I just listen to music until I can get back to sleep.

...I'm actually having insomnia right now! That's why I'm browsing pregnancy forums. lol...

    Good luck ladies! =)

  • Hey ladies..I had been suffering insomnia suddenly at about 10 weeks. It went on for a solid month before I couldnt take it anymore. Im a natural lady, and this was the first time I considered medication for sleep. But I convinced myself to try one more thing before going the med route. I went to a local community Acupuncturist. Some insurance covers treatments as well if you dont have community clinic. It runs about 20.00 per visit. I slept like a LOG the first night after TX. Went back every week and haven't had any insomnia since. It also really helped with nausea. I know some people are afraid of needles...but really you dont see them, and rarely feel them at all. Just keep your eyes closed and let the practitioner know you are a needle phob! They deal with it all the time and know how to avoid any freak outs :) It was so worth it, and I am a much happier person in the day time now. Hope this helps!
  • Definitely in the same boat. I am normally a person who sleeps a solid 8 hours and life is good. I'm lucky to get 4 hours now and that's with waking up every 45 minutes. I'm exhausted

  • I am 17 weeks and for the past month I have been able to fall asleep just fine but wake up constantly for no real reason and then finally give up after maybe 4 hours of broken sleep. I haven't found anything that helps yet. Glad to know I'm not alone.
  • I was sleeping soooo good during 1st tri. I'm 22 weeks now and haven't been able to fall asleep naturally for a while now. It's so annoying! I take 1/2 a unisom pretty early in the evening (8:30-9:00) because it takes a while to kick in. I haven't had a problem with feeling hungover or groggy yet. Insomnia sucks. I miss my ambien but haven't asked my OB if I get back on it yet.
  • Im just suffering. My OB said benadryl, but that did nothing. I get 4-6 hours of broken sleep and work about 10 hours a day. MISERY.

  • I've been suffering along with all of you ladies for basically the entirety of my pregnancy (was a decent sleeper before), and given how long my workdays are (and absolutely no chance of a mid-day nap), not sleeping is really not an option.

I had tried Unisom, and it helped me get to sleep, but not stay asleep for any length of time.

At my OB's urging, I had been taking Tylenol PM several times/wk (which helps somewhat), and in my most recent visit, she actually prescribed me 5mg Ambien. For some reason, I thought Ambien was on the no-fly list while pregnant, but apparently it just hasn't had sufficient clinical trials to be classified in the super safe Class A yet, but there has been no data proving it to be harmful. (But I'm not a Dr, so this is all heresay!)

    Hello sleep!

  • I'm with you. I always sleep late night, but now it's obnoxious... I have a really bad insomnia and only can sleep a few hours and the morning (guess what... my university classes are now in morning) so... yeah, pretty much no sleep for me.
I'm tired but I CAN'T sleep in the afternoon or early night as much as I try. I can't focus in anything.

But, there's a thing that it seems to work (at least in the last days -- and my doc told is safe): Jasmine tea -- you can find in japanese/chinese food stores. Caffeine free and safe for the baby, also help with cramps and relax a lot. In fact, when I drink, it feels like I took a half tablet of muscle relaxant.

  • I get that too on occasion. I get up and walk around and it puts me to sleep.
