West Penn delivery questions

Hi.  We are having our 1st child this November at West Penn.  I haven't found any literature on things like

1.  Regular delivery-who is allowed in room and at what times.  Can mother be in there while I'm delivering or only husband?

2.  Pictures/Video?  Are you allowed and up to what point?

3.  After delivery?  Is husband allowed to have wine/champagne in room?  Not sure I'll want any, but it would be a nice little thing if I felt up to it.

4.  How long do you stay if everything goes well?

5.  Can baby sleep in room with you if I want to breastfeed?

6.  Is it comfy for husband to stay in hospital with you and nap in a chair or something?

Any other things that you can think of that the dr's don't tell you prior to delivery.

Re: West Penn delivery questions

  • Those are questions my ob could answer about my hospital. So I would say ask your ob, he/she should be able to help! As for my hospital you stAy 3 days if no issues And you deliver vag., c-sections you stay another day. And as for recordings/pics you could do as much/little that you want! And as for people in the room while I was pushing it was just dh&i but throughout labor my family came back one at a time. Each hospital is different but usually your ob or their office can tell you the rules of their hospitals l&d floor!! Good luck! I know this time around my ob gave us a rule book for our hospital, which is nice because some things changed as far as visitor restrictions after baby is here;)

  • I would say register for the free hospital tour.   Here is the link.   They will be able to answer all of your questions then.   Except the one about how long you can stay.... you need to call your insurance company to get the answer for this.   Some are 2 days, some are 3, some are 48 hours, etc.

As a side note, hospitals are DISALLOWING many recording devices now as doctors/nurses are saying once they are posted online, it violates their privacy, so be careful w/ this.... ask, ask, ask!

    1.  Regular delivery-who is allowed in room and at what times.  Can mother be in there while I'm delivering or only husband?  I believe that 2 people are allowed in the delivery room.

    2.  Pictures/Video?  Are you allowed and up to what point? If I remember correctly, we weren't allowed any pictures/video until after DS was born.

    3.  After delivery?  Is husband allowed to have wine/champagne in room?  Not sure I'll want any, but it would be a nice little thing if I felt up to it.  We didn't do this, so I wouldn't know.

    4.  How long do you stay if everything goes well?  This depends on factors other than just hospital policy, such as insurance, type of delivery, etc.  I believe that, generally, it is 2 days for a vaginal birth and 3 days for a c-section.

    5.  Can baby sleep in room with you if I want to breastfeed?  The baby can room in with parents no matter how you feed the baby.

    6.  Is it comfy for husband to stay in hospital with you and nap in a chair or something?  There was a pull out sofa in the room where I labored.  Our post-partum suite was smaller and had a pull out chair.  It was doable for the short period of time that we were there.

You should really consider going on a tour of the hospital so that you can ask these questions and get the most accurate/current info.  Also, there are different entrances for when you come in in the evening/weekends as opposed to being admitted during the day.  You'll want to know where you need to go, what to do, what to bring, etc.

What they are REALLY worried about is liability. They don't want to do something wrong and have it all caught on videotape for the drooling malpractice lawyers...

  • I had my baby at West Penn two months ago.  You can send your baby to the nursery during the night even if you are breast feeding.  They will bring your baby to you every three hours when it is time to eat.  They were very exact with the timing!

The accomodations for my DH were doable.  He is 6'9 and if he can get some sleep on the couches, anyone can!  It's definitely not super comfortable and he'll tell you it was horrible.  :)  But he was staying with us no matter what so he made the best of it.
