Room sharing: Help please

When exactly did you put them in the same room?

DS is already out growing his bassinet. When he sleeps he loves to sprawl out and now he hits the side and wakes himself up.

Our room cannot fit a pack'n'play as it is I have one of those detachable top bassinets and its literally on my long dresser.

I'm just not sure if they're ready to be in the same room. From the time she goes to sleep (8pm) until she wakes up(7am) he wakes about 4 times.

  • I put DS and DD together when DD was 3 months old. She *was* STTN. We put DS to bed first and I bring DD in after DS is completely asleep. 99% of the time DS will sleep through DD's night wakings. They do wake each other in the morning though.

  • I waited until my DD was STTN for a few weeks.  She started STTN very early, around 4 weeks, but I didn't move her into DS's room until she was 3 months.  IMO wait until he is STTN... I wouldn't want to wake up the good sleeper:)

  • DD1 was 18 months and STTN.  DD2 was 5.5 months and waking 1-2 times per night.  The first few nights, DD1 woke up when DD2 cried to nurse.  By the fourth night, DD1 wasn't waking at all. DD2 started STTN about a month later.

  • DD1 was 18 months (STTN) and DD2 was 6 months.  DD2 wasnt (and still isnt) STTN, but she has never woken her sister.  I was AMAZED and thought that sharing a room would be a nightmare, but its actually worked out very smoothly.
  • maybe try it out and see how it goes? It will be tough since he is so young and in a different room from you, but maybe ds will just sleep thru it all and adjust to him.. im going to try to hold off moving to shared rooms til shes 3-4 months, but i have big babies so we will see how that goes. Good luck!

  • DS was 3-1/2 and shortly after we moved DD to her crib (roughly 6 weeks or so) she was STTN (which to US is about midnight to 6am or so) So far they do not seem to wake each other (its been about a year) Initially we staggered bedtimes (not putting DD down in the crib in their room until midnight!) but after about 2 months of that we were able to put them down together (which IMO makes putting them down together for afternoon naps easier!)

IF you have no room and DD is outgrowing the bassinet I say move her and it may be rough for the first few days or so but in the end they will learn how to sleep through each others' noises! GL
