high fever with cutting molars?

I know DS is cutting his 1 year molars.  I can feel the upper left one trying its best to poke through.

My question is, did any of you experience HIGH fevers with teething?  DS will spike over 103 !!   I took him to the pedi today and they don't see anything else wrong, but it just seems so high just for teething.

We are doing the whole alternating ibuprofen and acetaminophen thing, cool clothing, lukewarm baths to bring the temp down.  But every 4 hours its right back up there.

Re: high fever with cutting molars?

  • My DS has never spiked any sort of a fever with teething, but I know some do.  I personally think 103 is excessive.  I know it can stay that high "safely" for 72 hours and just be something viral (that they couldn't really treat anyway).  But after 72 hours it is likely bacterial.  I'd just keep an eye on it and take him back if it doesn't go away in a couple days.  Poor baby! :(

  • I agree, my son had 102 and we took him in, the pedi said there was no way it was teething. Granted all pedi's have different opinions but my son ended up sick with a virus, rash and sores in his mouth so it wasn't teething. I'd have him checked out if it. Good luck!
  • How long has he had it?  My DS is cutting molars and a few days ago spiked a 103 fever and I thought they were probably related, but then today woke up with a red rash and pedi confirmed it is most likey roseola.
  • DS1 spiked a 105 fever with each molar and they all came at different times.  The first two times I freaked the he!l out.  The last two I took in stride.  It could be a bug or it could be the molars.  Just keep an eye out for other symptoms.  DS2 was different.  He cut them all at once and was just crabby and didn't sleep for 2 weeks.

Started Saturday some time.  Came home from a day at the beach and was 101 ish.  Sunday 99-102.  Today 103 when he woke up at 6a, then was low grade most of the day (on meds every 4 hours) and 103 again at 6p. Its 100.2 right now.  Just kind of whiney and clingy.  Clear runny nose.

From my experience, DD had 2 high fevers the day before her molars popped out(top two first, then the bottom two).  Both times, she was fine all day and then woke up from her nap with a 102 fever and no other symptoms.  We treated with Tylenol + another dose before she went to bed, and she was fine by the next morning without a recurring fever.  Since your son's is lasting longer, it might be something else.
