Toddlers: 24 Months+

Stuttering - pretty much started overnight?

My almost 3 yr old DS just recently started to stutter at the beginning of his sentences.  Sometimes it can go on for like 15+seconds before he is able to blurt out the word he is trying to say.  It is so sad to watch - I had read online that you shouldn't bring attention to it or tell them to slow down, etc.  Has anyone else dealt with this? I plan to ask at his 3 yr well visit in a month but I just wasn't sure if I was doing the right thing by letting him get his word out alone. He does sometimes look frustrated :(

Re: Stuttering - pretty much started overnight?

  • Just went through this exact same thing!!  I grabbed some pamphlets from the speech office near us.  The information I read is that it's really common.. they call them disfluences and it's when kids are trying to learn new words and saying new sentences.  DS did it for about a month and hasn't done it since then.  I was really worried about it too.  The advice they gave was to just let them get it out.. try to talk slower to them and not rush through sentences.. it helps them learn to pace themselves.  He would sometimes start a word 15 times before he would finish it.  I was really worried for a while but everything I heard from others and from what I've read said it was normal and it's totally gone now.

  • Yep! My DS went through the same thing for about a month or two. I was really worried but now it's pretty much gone. I noticed with him, he struggled the most on questions that begin with W - Where? What? When? Why? He's just fine now and asks questions fine for the most part but still trips up every now and then when he's asking a question and he's really excited.
  • DD does this too and it's been going on about 2-3 months now. I asked at her 3 year old checkup and they said it's normal, but she should be assessed if it continues for 6 months.

The one thing the pedi told me is not to draw attention to it. Just sit patiently and listen to her.

My friend's son started doing that at 3 or 4. He's 5 now. It stopped on its own. No stutter.
  • Very common and usually resolves itself.  Don't make a big deal about it.   Be patient.  I remember DS1 going through this around 2.5, right around the same time he was potty training.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • DS did this for about four months. He would start a sentence and get stuck on the first word and literally have to try and say it about eight times. "D-d-d-d-d-d-d-do you have some crackers for me?" We didn't even acknowledge it really and sure enough, it just went away after a few months.

I had a horrible stutter as a child and my parents always said, "stop and think about what you want to say..." that's when I'd usually say, "never mind" and walk away.

It was a horrible stutter, usually came about in the beginning of sentences and when I was very excited to tell a story, etc.

I am happy to say I am now stutter-free!  With the once-in-awhile stutter that no-one notices but me.
