We are building a playground area in our back yard... We thought about putting rubber mulch but it is sooooooo expensive, we need to cover 360 sq ft.
Do you think regular much is a good idea?
I wouldn't do regular mulch, since you can get nasty splinters. Pea Gravel I think would actually be better. A few parks around our house have regular mulch and DD got all scraped up and splinters in her knees from it.

ITA! I hate regular mulch and will never understand why anyone ever thought it was a good idea to make sharp chunky sticks into a playground surface! Sand is another good option.
My 2 girls, both born on a Friday the 13th, are exactly 2 years, 2 months, 2 hours and 2 minutes apart! And Baby Boy joined us October 11, 2013!
Wood mulch is bad. When I was little one of the girls fell of the swing she poked her eye out with the piece of wood and is blind in one eye. Use something round.... like sand or better yet peagravel

Nothing is perfect but in theory mulch helps cushion the fall. They make specific mulch for playgrounds, I wouldn't use the kind for gardens. Is there a building supply store you can order mulch by the cubic yard from? Pea gravel seems to be a regional thing, I never here of people out my way using it.

Sand serves dual purpose of digging or safety.

Regular mulch wouldn't be my first choice because of splinters like PP said, plus many of the colors bleed/stain.
I recommend grass!
