Baby Names

How would you pronounce our girls name?

We are naming our little girl Carys and we are keeping it a secret until she is born. I personally love the name and find it very unique but not crazy. It means "to love" in welsh which makes it even better. I personally have a name that people mess up all the time "Denean" but ive gotten use to it and im ok with it now. Im afraid tho that our girl will have the same problem so I wanted to see if its really that hard to pronounce after seeing how it is spelt. Thanks in advance!!

  • I'm not sure if I say it correctly, but I always thought it was like "Paris" but with a "C" instead.

Me too. People on this board might not be representative of the general public, though. I'm sure you'll hear some variation in pronunciation in real life...but all in all, people will figure it out. Lovely name!

These... I've seen slightly different pronunciations on different baby name sites though.  I think people might put the accent wrong or change one of the vowel sounds, but I don't think they will completely butcher it, either.

  • CARE-iss.

I could see it being pronounced ca-REES too, though. I don't know much about this name, and don't know anyone named it.

  • I always thought it was Care-iss.

  • I think this is a beautiful name!  To me, it rhymes with Paris.  I've never heard it pronounced any other way.

  • I agree with pp that this board doesn't really represent the general public. It is a well liked name on this board. I'd ask on another board too. P.S. Carys is one of my favorites! :)

  • Beautiful name and I pronounce it like the other ladies.  Rhyming with Paris.  I knew only one person with this name, but they spelled it "Caris" I believe.

  • It's a beautiful name and it's on my short list. However, I think the standard pronunciation is care- is rhyming with Paris.
  • I always thought it was Car-EES, but I learned on this board that it rhymes with Paris. Would not have known that otherwise.

  • The Carys I know pronounces it like Paris with a c.

DH vetoed it from our list because he thought it sounded too much like "caress."

  • I had a friend in college with that name. People usually said it wring the first time, but it easy to catch on.

Ditto. There is a sweet little girl in my son's preschool class with this name and that's how they pronounce it. It is lovely.

  • I would pronounce it like Paris, but with a C. Only because I know someone with a daughter named that and that's how they pronounce it. I think that would still by my guess if I hadn't heard it before. I do love it. It's a beautiful names.
