Childbirth Classes

So my husband and I are looking into the childbirth classes and they are a little spendy in our area so I'm wondering if those of you who have taken the classes feel that they were worth the investment.

Re: Childbirth Classes

  • It wasn't worth it for me and DH.  We're doing a series of DVDs we got on Amazon, called Laugh & Learn about Childbirth.

  • This is my first child so I cant answer from that perspective but, check out babycenter.com. they have this free online childbirth class. My husband and I are watching it little by little and so far so good.

    Good Luck!

  • With DS, DH and I took the 1-day (8 hours) course at our hospital. It's $120 and well worth it. I have asked DH to take just the breathing and relaxation class with me this time to review breathing techniques and things, since we didn't get to experience that part much with DS, because I had a c/s. This time I want a VBAC, so I'd like to brush up. That class will cost us $50.

  • I haven't checked into the prices yet.  I looked at what is offered at the hospital where I will be delivering and the only one that has a price listed is the Infant/Child CPR course.  I will be curious to see how much the other classes are.  I'll probably call in the next few weeks to get signed up, etc.  I don't really know what the time frame is for that but one of the classes is 6 weeks long and the others are only offered 1x or 2x per week.

Thank you for this! DH and I weren't sure if we were going to take a class or not. We just watched the preview and thought it would be a good idea. And if we're not satisfied with it we can always then pay to take the class at the hospital.

  • We spent a big chunk on The Bradley Method natural childbirth classes, and that was well worth it. I say that because it was 12 weeks of classes (12 classes altogether), and we got materials to take home, along with a "Student workbook". They go through everything. With this being our second time around, I thought about trying hypnobirthing, but since the instructor here only provides 4 classes, I didn't think it was worth so much money. We're going to get our own materials via Amazon.com, and if it were my first, I would use the hospital's free or cheap classes. Babies'r'us provides free breastfeeding classes every month as well. If you're paying that much to sit & listen to someone & watch a few videos, that's something that could be done online on various sites.

I'm giving birth at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN and they offer a 5 week course that is $75/per couple.  Have you looked into what your hospital has to offer?

I suspect the $75 will be well worth it - especially for a first time Mommy!

  • I took Lamaze with my first and just a hospital based childbirth prep class with my second. They were both well worth my money.

  • We started taking Hypnobirthing at our local hospital.  I think it is going to be well worth the money.  This is our first time around so DH and I decided to take the classes. My health insurance also reimburses us for any health related classes with a certificate of attendence. Childbirth classes fall into that catagory.
  • I took a Childbirth Class, a Baby Care Class, and a Breastfeeding class with my first pregancy.  Really the only one I found at all helpful was the Baby Care Class.  You are going to get a lot of advice from parents about how to take care of the baby, but they are the old school methods (some of which aren't so safe anymore).
