Spotting With Multiples

Is it true that you're more likely to spot when you're pregnant with multiples?  My partner is 6 weeks, 4 days pregnant.  She started spotting about a week ago.  At that time, they said: "you could come in for an US, but it doesn't really matter since it's early."

On the US we found out we were having twins and we saw both heartbeats.  This was at 5 weeks, 6 days.  Obviously seeing the heartbeats was really assuring.  However, she has been spotting intermittently over the past week.  Sometimes it's pink/brown and sometimes it's red.  Never more than a quarter size and no cramping.

Any thoughts on this??

Re: Spotting With Multiples

  • This sounds just like me. I spotted on and off for the first 4 months. It turned out that I had a small subchorionic bleed in one placenta that resolved itself by about 16 weeks.

  • I had no spotting with my singleton and I had about a week of spotting like you describe with my twins.  It is common with multiples.  Congrats on your twins!

  • I'm another who had bleeding off and on for the first few weeks of pregnancy. I had some bright red bleeding at 5 weeks and then more around 8 weeks and it lasted until about 12-13 weeks or so. I have no idea if it had anything to do with being pregnant with twins though.

It was so scary but ultimately everything turned out okay. Good luck to you and your partner.

  • I've always heard that spotting is common with multiples.  I spotted on 2 or 3 occasions early in my pg - anything from brown spotting to red with some clots but never any cramps.  The first was around 6w and the other time or 2 were after our 1st u/s (at 7w).  I had 4 previous m/cs so I was *freaked* despite my strong betas and perfect u/ss.  It's super scary but tell your partner to try to relax as much as she can.  My nurse suggested drinking lots of water and keeping my feet up when I spotted.

GL to you both and welcome to the wonderful world of multiples!  :)

  • Sounds like a normal pregnancy for me haha.  I spot with all of my pregnancies and with the twins I pretty much full out had a period....cramps and all.  I'm now 22 weeks prego.  I think if you saw two heartbeats you are prob okay!  GL sweetie!

  • I also have a subchorionic bleed right at my cervix that they discovered around 8 weeks. I have spotted dark brown blood a few times since then. Today actually was heavy than others (but still dark brown). My doctor's say its normal as long as it's not bright red or heavy. I still always go in for an U/S just to be sure and ease my nerves. But i'm sure its fine.

  • I had period like bleeding three times in the first trimester. It ranged from red to brown to pink. Hope that helps!

    Oh and congrats!

  • I didn't have spotting but did have a whole gush of blood around week 7-8 (I thought I had peed my pants).  At first they did an U/S and thought they saw one baby and a hematoma but then at 12 weeks we saw twins (but no hematoma) so now they don't know if I even had a hematoma or if that was the second sac they were seeing (since it was so early on).   Good luck and talk to your doctor about it.

  • First, congrats! Second, coming in late to say that I had a SCH and bled heavily from 8w to 10w. I put myself on bedrest (as much as possible; I still worked but that was about it) and drank lots of water and I really think those two things did help. Best wishes to you and your partner! I know it's scary-- my wife was just saying yesterday how scary that time was (she teared up and everything!), even though obviously now we know everything worked out (as evidenced by our kiddos splashing in the tub at the time :)).

  • I spotted/minor bleeding until 10 weeks-ish. That's how we found out about our twins. I bled at 6w and went for an urgent scan. Voila.
