Re: Baby can read?

  • I have never actually seen the product, but I would say that babies/toddlers cannot read, but they can, over time, memorize cards.  I have a masters in literacy education, and I have to say that reading is much more than that (which I am sure you already know).  I guess it depends on your expectations and commitment to it, but I think it seems like a waste of money.

  • As PP said, it doesn't actually teach your child to read, letter names, sounds, and how to form words, it is just rote memorization.  IMO if you want to invest time and money to teach your child to read buy those magnetic alphabet letters and play letter games with your child.  I also love the "leap frog learning bus" I hate the song but DD1 knows that "B says Buh"

Ditto all of this.  (Well, change out the masters in literacy education for a masters in teaching and a reading specialist certification.)

You don't need a fancy, smancy program to teach your child to read.  The best thing that you can do as a parent is have many different sources of literature around your house.  Read to your child every day.  Once they are old enough, read the newspaper with him/her in the morning.  Expose your child to many different genres.

There are some children who do read very early, but that is because they have acquired the skills needed and are highly gifted.  Most kids who 'read' their favorite book early on are doing so from memorization.
