If you have done a family tree did you buy a program to do it on? Does ancestry .com offer one? I have all this info about my family but I need an orderly way to write it all down. Thanks!

I use "My heritage Family tree builder" just the free version. I hope to get to upgrade to the paid version and also get an ancestry.com membership one day (gotta get out of debt first).
I use alot of free places- but you do have to be wary if its just info out there laying around the web- it may not be right.
Check your library, or the library near where your family is from. Through my library I get access to census records (that are released)- easy to search too- not sure what extra ancestry.com would offer though.
if you happen to have any WV connections they have a great site wvculture.org- lots of info and also a place to search birth death and marriage certs.
In my database, I've input over 1800 people and still have hundreds more to do that I know of currently, just need the time to input. So it can become a huge project.
I don't have a constant Ancestry membership.
I started with the 2 week free trial and then quit. About 6 months later I paid for a month to get the new info and then quit again. I usually pay for a month every 6-9 months.
