Anybody know about Tiramisu?

I was not thinking tonight and ordered tiramisu (my favorite) from Olive Garden today. The only thing that crossed my mind was the caffeine and since I've pretty much cut that out completly, I was not concerned. Then I googled it and saw some concerns with Tiramisu was that it can be made with raw egg! Yikes!! I had no idea. I'm hoping that Olive Garden being a chain would not use raw egg but I'm a little nervous now. I know I can't change it so I'll try not to worry too much but has anyone heard anything specific about this from your dr/mw?

Thanks!

Re: Anybody know about Tiramisu?

  • I'm sure you're fine. It is made with raw egg and sugar whisked over a double boiler when made at home, but their's is made elsewhere and shipped in. It does have a good amount of caffeine, and some versions (I doubt OG's) contain alcohol. I'm sure you'll be fine, but order the lemon cake next time.

  • Ah! When I saw this I thought your concern was going to be alcohol- it's traditionally made with a small amount of liquor as well. I do use raw egg yolks when I make it. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the concern with this would be salmonella? So if you're not feeling like you have food poisoning, then you likely have nothing to worry about. Regardless, I wouldn't sweat it too much! HTH!

  • Thanks ladies. I'll try not to worry and will choose a different dessert next time.

  • I can't imagine a chain restaurant in the US could serve something made with raw egg without a disclaimer of some sort. I'm also fairly sure they don't actually make it there and probably buy it frozen or something lol. Not only would I not worry, I'd probably order it again if I wanted.

  • I agree that its likely frozen on arrival, like almost everything else!

  • I use to be a waitress at Olive Garden and none of the desserts were made on site.

  • I would be shocked if it were made with unpasteurized eggs and alcohol.
