do you eat at subway?

My df wanted subway today so we went there.  My friend who is pregnant told me she eats there but gets either the meatball or chicken subs.  I kind of wanted a tuna sub but it made me nervous watching that everything was just sitting out there.  I figured it would be ok but the smells were enough to not make me too hungry so I just got a drink but wondering if subway is ok if you just avoid the lunch meat subs.

Re: do you eat at subway?

  • i eat @ subway.  with my 2nd pregnancy all i craved was a turkey sub from there. i always had them toast my lunch meat subs so they would be safer to eat.

  • I eat there on occasion. I either get the roasted chicken breast - which they always warm up - or a veggie sub. I wouldn't worry about the toppings sitting out, subway is usually a pretty busy place and their toppings get replenished quite often. You don't want to know how many restaurants have things just sitting out before they serve you.

  • I ate there all the time with my 1st, 2nd, and now with this baby.  I usually get the club, not toasted.  I was told, as long as the meat has a high turnover, it's ok.

  • I eat there, but only the meatball, veggie delight, veggie burger, or chicken sandwiches.

Edit: Oh, and I used to work there as a teenager, so I'm familiar with their sanitation practices. While pregnant, I would not recommend the Tuna sandwich, as I don't think it's really kept cold enough to be safe. However, the meatballs are kept hot enough and you can always toast anything to be hotter.

  • I eat there 3-4 times a week with not toasting the sub and eating the lunch meat. My dr said as long as it has a fast turnover your fine!  I did the same thing with my DD, and she came out perfectly fine. If you want a tuna sub and you haven't had your 'quota' of seafood that week your good! Enjoy it!

Exactly! Subway isn't the only place that does this. Also, it doesn't matter what kind of meat (excluding tuna) as long as you can nuke it (as my ob/gyn says)! I love Subway!

  • I eat there maybe once a week and get either an un-toasted melt or BMT. I personally stay away from the tuna, but for the seafood factor only (even though I know tuna is okay in moderation).

  • I eat turkey and ham subs from there a lot. I crave them. I can understand your worry though. I am sure if you were to go around lunch time or a time when they are a little more busy you would get some fresher food than if you went after the rush when stuff starts to just sit.

  • I eat at subway, usually a toasted BLT or a veggie delite. I also eat at Jimmy Johns, and they dont toast their subs.

  • Something to keep in mind is that everything isn't just sitting out.  The case that the food containers are sitting in is an open topped cooler (the "top" is the food containers) so the food is kept cold enough to be in accordance with the health inspectors policies.  If it's not cold enough at inspection they have a very limited amount of time to correct the issue before a re-inspection.  If it's still not cold enough at re-inspection the store could be immediately shut down.

Generally, if they're having issues with keeping the food cold enough it's an issue with the cooler, so it would affect all of the food, not just specific ones.

Unless you've seen a recent inspection report that concerns you, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I love their tuna subs! I usually go with tuna or sweet onion chicken teriyaki, but meatballs and steak should work too!
