Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Switching to formula. some questions

life has just gotten insane and so I'm switching from EBF over to formula. DS seems to spit up a ton and really fussy if I drink milk so I have not drank it since he's been 3 weeks old.

anyway, so when I did occansionally give him a bottle I was given him similac soy.

So we were trying a full day of formula and I was pumping. I figured since he was on formula all day he would sleep better, less gassy. At 12am I was in pain so I nursed him a little bit to relieve the pain. From 12-6am he was screaming his head off.

Could one breastmilk feeding in there hurt his tummy so quick?

Also, since he was still pretty gassy and obviously in pain (even with gas drops and gripe water)  Do you think somethink like the alimintuem(sp?) would work better?

He is just SOO gassy and cries all night. During the day he does pretty well but nighttime is the worst. he has relfux and on zantac and we elevate his mattress.

ahhh I just want a normal happy pain free baby....

Re: Switching to formula. some questions

  • My son was extremely fussy and gassy too while he was getting BM. I thought it was dairy so I quit eating it but it only helped a bit. I noticed when I would eat any grease at all, he would have screaming fits for hours at a time. Finally I couldn't handle it anymore, (plus my supply was dropping big time) so I started doing half BM, half formula. His mood changed  A TON! He was about 4 months old around that time so I still can't say if he was just growing out of the fussy stage or if it was the formula helping his tummy. We switched to just regular Enfamil so I know he wasn't dairy intolerant. I hated to stop BFing, but after seeing how it improved his mood, I wished I had done it earlier.

A few weeks later I tried giving him some frozen BM just to see how he handled it, and he had another screaming fit shortly after. I hope you can find something that helps your LO feel better. Good luck!

Oh and if you do decide to switch to formula, I would at least try regular for a few days to see how he tolerates that. Then if his problems persist, you could try Alimentum or something similar. It would suck to spend all that money if the regular stuff would do. We actually use the Up & Up brand now so it's even cheaper.

  • Maybe try Enfamil Gentlease before you try one of the more expensive formulas. Gentlease is partially broken down milk proteins, and is supposed to help with gas/fussiness. DS has a milk allergy with regular formulas, but is able to tolerate the Gentlease pretty well.

This! And He may just need time to adjust.
