To those with irregular babies

My son only poops every 2-5 days.  I started solids with oatmeal instead of rice because of his issue.  Did you find that any particular foods helped him become more regular?  I am scared to try rice, bananas, and apples because I don't want baby to get more constipated than he already is.

Thanks!

  • Lilly is a regular 2x a day pooper, so I am afraid to give her this... What about prunes?

  • We struggle with constipation because Lena is on Enfamil AR. We regulate things with prunes/plums and making her cereal with apple or prune juice instead of formula. GL!

  • We had issues with it and are on Enfamil Gentlease. I did try Rice for 3 days but it made him worse. I don't give any cereal just fruit and veggies. It works for us and our Pedi says we dont have to give cereal.

  • I keep reading that bananas are good to help relieve constipation....ds eats them all the time and no issues pooping

I was lead to believe the opposite is true about bananas. When I was in the hospital after having Lilly, they brought a fruit cart around. I promptly grabbed  banana. My cousin, who is a nurse, was visiting me at the time. She told me the bananas could back me up more than I already would be, and that I probably shouldn't eat that.

  • Prunes are good, also apricots and pears. DS1 was constipated after starting solids until his body adjusted. I gave him 1-2 oz of prune juice every day.

  • Chamomile tea, and mangos are great to help with tummy issues, my LO loves them and goes like a champ when I give it to her. Also Canteloupe.

  • How long did it take for your baby's tummy to adjust? We started solids and literally didn't sleep for 4 nights because of tummy issues (combined with teething). I'm wondering if I feed solids earlier, her tummy might have time to adjust before bed. Thoughts?? ETA: this was in reply to ms. mittens :)

Oh...and oatmeal backed up my daughter as well. She was straining a bit. When I moved her on to sweet potatoes, things seemed to get a little better, but she's definitely having trouble adjusting. No sleep for us. Think I'll try to feed solids earlier and cross my fingers.

  • We use Biogena probiotics... 5 drops in her bottle. Normally I really dislike adding anything un-natural to her diet, but she has such a sensitive tummy, our Dr. recommended this to us. It has helped not only relieve constipation, but also her gas/tummy issues. After having to cease breastfeeding, we also put her on Enfamil Gentle Ease.

Oh, and we completely stopped giving her rice cereal or bananas after a few painful constipation episodes. She only eats pears, prunes, and vegetables now.
