OK I just read all the info on why nitrates are bad for you and we're having a BBQ this weekend and I'm REALLLLY wanting a hot dog... are there are nitrate-free hot dogs? If so - are those safe for preggos to eat? If not I'll obviously just wait a couple months but wanted to check. I've been very "by the book" on what I can eat since we tried for 4+ years - I don't want to take any chances.
Re: Nitrate-Free Safe Hotdogs?
Oscar Mayer Angus No Nitrate Added. Just had 2.
ETA: No added Nitrates does not mean Nitrate Free... as far as I know, there are no Nitrate FREE dogs. These however only have naturally occurring Nitrates and have had none added.
There's lots of products on the market these days without added synthetic nitrates. Usually they have celery salt or other natural preservatives (still contain natural nitrates). You're fine to eat a properly cooked hot dog now and then, in moderation. Have a little fun, eat a hot dog and relax!
I have not noticed a difference. Someone else said this to me the other day but I enjoy these dogs just fine.
This. I only eat nitrate-free turkey dogs though, not even hot dogs and I can't tell a difference. I try to avoid nitrates like the plague. Just too many "unknowns" out there about them. I'm all about preventing diseases as much as I can.
We buy Applegate Farms. Again, we get the Turkey Dogs, but here is a link to their hot dogs. Just be aware that due to them not being pumped full of crap (preservatives), once you've opened them, they can go bad quickly, so freeze whatever you aren't going to eat in the next couple of days. You are fine to leave them in the fridge un-opened through their expiration date and then freeze them if you want.

These have been my savior this summer! DH and I love to BBQ hot dogs on the grill and I've enjoyed these no added nitrate ones.
I'm with Knoxbride - I tend to be nitrate-free in general (both with my bacon and my dogs) and opt for turkey dogs and haven't ever noticed a difference.
I hadn't even thought about bacon until I started reading more into it... is there a nitrate-free bacon? I loooove bacon but I really haven't eaten too much of it.

Regarding the whole taste issue - I rather have something that tastes different and be safer than just be selfish to satisfy my taste buds. I think of all the things my mom and dad (or gma and gpa) could eat or do because it was deemed "safe" and now it's an unmentionable... perhaps nitrates and nitrites will be one of those unmentionables in a generation or two. BUT thankfully everyone else says they taste great so I'm all over it!
Yep! We get the Earth Fare (healthy supermarket based out of Asheville, NC), brand turkey bacon. It's really good. Sadly, everything we've seen at regular grocery stores has nitrates, even Oscar Meyer, Butterball, etc. Applegate Farms has Organic Turkey Bacon too. They also have Natural Regular Bacon too.
Here's a link to their meats.

These are amazing, and I've been waiting for several weeks for these to go on sale again so I can stock up.
Based on what I've seen, nitrates must be used in the curing process of bacon because usually I can pick up uncured bacon that's nitrate-free fairly easily.

This. 'No Nitrates Added' = marketing ploy. They still contain nitrates, just via natural forms. End result is probably identical. Exercise moderation and all will be fine.
