My cervix was very uncooperative during a procedure my doctor did on me back in May, so he wants me to insert a cytotec (misoprostol) pill tomorrow night, and then again 12 hours later Sunday morning so that we don't run into issues on the day of ET (which would take place ~2 to 2.5 weeks after taking the pills).
The medication has huge warnings all over it about not to be used if pregnant, and that it is used I guess with abortions and sometimes to try and induce labor (although this method seems hugely warned against from the research I've done). It is mainly a stomach ulcer medication I believe, but is also used for cervix ripening. Go figure. You don't find much info at ALL out there about using this med for ET prep.
I just emailed my nurse today to ask her what the worst case scenario would be if I didn't use the pills this weekend. Would I just have to be dilated again (which, um, OW...) because if that's the case I'd take the pain of 1 day (I'll be on valium anyway at that point...maybe I won't care so much!) over putting this crazy medication in my body. Seriously, the things you read about it are scary. I don't want to go against what my doctor is recommending, obviously...but I also don't like just putting any and everything into my body!
I'm just nervous and venting...thanks for reading.
Update: I just got off the phone with the nurse. She said that the cytotec will make my transfer MUCH more pleasant, because according to the doctor's notes, I have cervical stenosis and (in his words, I quote) "a treacherous cervix". She said I will probably experience severe cramping Saturday night/Sunday (and of course I can't take advil) but that it should, in the end, help make transfer easier. So...I guess I'm inserting the cytotec tomorrow night. Gah.

That does seem weird, but I am sure he has used it in the past. I had to use it before my D&C, but it didn't seem to help much.
I hope you get some answers.

It's a very scary drug. I read up about it before I took it and all the warning scared me too.
I didn't do it for an ET, so I can understand why you would be so scared. If you are uncomfortable, I would definatley talk to your RE and see if there is another option!

Hi, and good luck! How many pills do you have to take? The cytotec is basically to dilate your cervix. TMI ahead: I had to take 4 before my last d & c and it basically started my m/c before the surgery. I was in excrutiating pain at the hospital as time went on, waiting for the doctor to get there for the surgery (who was late), but it was a whoooole different scenario than what you'll be doing. I actually think it's smart that they're having you take it; they told me that they had me take it because most of the complications from surgery happens when they're trying to dilate your cervix.
I'm wishing you TONS of good luck and smooth ER/ET vibes!!
Hi Jill! I can't believe you're half-way through your pregnancy! Have you found out what you're having?
I have to do 2 pills...one tomorrow night, and one 12 hours later. I'm beyond nervous. I feel like I'm more nervous about this than I am about flying to Colorado, going through surgery, and going through transfer. I realize that sounds...crazy?...but true. Uggg I can't wait until this part is over.
