Food Allergy

Milk Intolerance & Gas

DD was diagnosed with a milk intolerance at 5 weeks old.  They had us try wean back to regular formula at 4 months.  She had no issues at first so two weeks later we started rice cereal and then oatmeal.  DD slowly developed gas issues at night which is what she did in the beginning screaming and horrible gas.  So we stopped all baby food and changed back to Nutramigen.  She did fine so we started the rice cereal back and the oatmeal and the gas is returning at night only.

My question is there something in the rice cereal or the oatmeal that is milk based that could be causing the gas or is it most likely totally unrelated to the milk intolerance?

Feeling a bit overwhelmed with preparing to start finger foods and having to avoid dairy so any advice is appreciated.

  • the cereal itself can cause tummy issues (constipation etc.).  not an allergy issue- just her gi system adjusting to the new foods.  I'd just pull cereals and re-introduce in a few weeks.  Not all babies are ready at 4/5 months for baby food.  if you think she's ready for food- you could try a fruit or veggie instead of cereal.  those might be easier for her to digest.

  • Try Beechnut - it's soy and dairy free (others are not)

Agreed. DD gets constipated on rice cereal and is allergic to oatmeal. After 2 failed attempts I moved on to veggie purees and she loved them. When introducing new foods if your LO has tummy issues I would wait more like a week in between foods instead of following the 3 day rule.

  • Too much rice can constipate them. My son is allergic to oatmeal as well as milk, soy, and possibly coconut. His acid reflux, ezcema and gas get worse when there is any allergen. Also, watch which cereal you use bc Gerber I think has milk in it. We use Earth's Best rice cereal and never had a problem with it.
  • Some infant cereals definitely do have dairy in them, I know the Gerber cereal does.  If your LO has a milk intolerance I would read the ingredient lists carefully and find one that is dairy free.  I've been using Earth's Best.  However, my LO had a reaction to oatmeal cereal (hives) so we haven't been giving him that.  It's possible that your LO isn't ready for cereal, is reacting to the cereal itself, or reacting to possible dairy in the cereal.  You could always wait a bit and try again when your LO is older?

  • My son has a milk intoleranace, and had the same troubles with the cereals.  Talk to your pedi for other options.  Like PP, the rice cereal can be constipating.  My pedi recommended trying the other grains.  We never really found a good option with the cereals.  We basically just moved on to the fruits and vegetables with mixing a little cereal here and there.  Although, the cereals are important for vitamins and nutrients.
