Well, I assume it's unpopular...
I don't like all these "fat is beautiful" posters... Not that I think fat is "ugly" but it's not healthy. I am fat, I understand it's hard to lose weight, but I don't necessarily think fat = beautiful.
This is what sparked this post:
Re: I have an unpopular opinion
I think that fat people can be beautiful but it is not the fat that makes them beautiful. So I agree with you.
I do cringe when people say "she would be so pretty if she just lost some weight," implying someone can't be beautiful unless they are skinny. I don't agree. For example Star Jones, I always thought she had a really pretty face when she was big and now that she is thin I think her face looks gross.
You gotta google that. She made statement recently that if you want to lose weight you can. No excuses.

It looks like this chick forgot she was taking this pic in the mirror at first .
I don't think that it is a bad thing for people to try to be healthier if they are overweight. I also don't think it's the fat or lack thereof that makes someone beautiful. Skinny is not beautiful all the time either.
Hmm guess my opinion isn't too unpopular...
I don't really think the girl in that photo is fat.
I can see that it would be very frustrating to be fat and have the world tell you that it makes you ugly. We seem to have this notion that it is only some outlier fetishists who think fat is beautiful or that someone might be beautiful only in spite of being fat. We all know that for a very long time fat was beautiful because it symbolized wealth and leisure. I think "Fat is beautiful" movement wants to say that there is nothing inherently gross about being fat. It is a current cultural taste. And maybe we can change our taste to be accepting of more body types.
The notion that fat equals unhealthy isn't entirely accurate. You can be healthy and still be overweight. You can be slender and really unhealthy. Here's an article from the Washington Post from a few years back that there's at least one study that indicates that overweight (not obese) people have a longer life expectancy than average and underweight people:

Medically speaking, I am about 100lbs overweight. AND healthy! *gasp*
I have ZERO issues, medically speaking. Just had my blood run again for work and I do not have high cholesterol, do not have high blood pressure (mine actually runs a bit low), my sugar is fine, etc. I'm not even on the radar for "concern" level on any of those items.
I know, I know -- EVENTUALLY, I could be unhealthy. That is COULD be. But again, I'm 35 yrs old, 100lbs overweight and HEALTHY! Probably healthier than my 112lb mom. And my 135lb sister. Because all they eat is JUNK (ie. ice cream sundaes, etc). I actually eat really healthy (ie. balanced), I just eat TOO much! (And drink too much booze -- again, medically speaking! LOL)!
So there ya have it. Fat doesn't always = unhealthy! (And now, let the 110 posts about how I WILL have diabetes, high cholesterol and the like in just 5 short years. It WILL happen. Because oh no, in Nest land you cannot possibly be 100lbs overweight and healthy. It just doesn't happen! *snort*)
But what makes me not healthy? The weight, in and of itself? I have nothing else wrong with me - other than being 100lbs overweight.
There is something called Visceral Fat. It is the fat that is inside you and can slowly choke out your organs (in laymans terms). By being over weight, you are increasing the amount of Visceral Fat that you have. Visceral Fat is very hard to lose, much harder than Subcutaneous fat. There has been a strong correlation found between Visceral Fat and Coronary Disease. By reducing your overall body fat you will ultimately reduce both your Subcutaneous and Visceral Fat lowering your risks. And as you know, Coronary Disease isn't the only risk associated with Obesity, but you've already said that you don't want to hear about the what if's, maybe's and might's, so I'll just stop talking now.

thumbs up to mominator. Fat is not healthy. And honestly, I don't think fat is pretty. I've been obese. It wasn't attractive. I'm not saying I think fat people are ugly, but the fat itself is not so pretty. I cringed every time I looked at myself in the mirror naked.
The obesity epidemic makes me sad. I don't think stick skinny is healthy, either (I've been that, too). OR pretty. There has to be a happy medium.
Do you feel like it should be?
(and this isn't meant to be snarky..... just a question)
This is how I feel. I've seen myself when I'm fat... not a good look.
But, I've also seen myself "too skinny", I look like I'm sick.
I know where I look healthy, and I know what I need to do to get there (I'm just lazy)
No. LOL! I'm just saying that her opinion is not unpopular. Especially here, where people have the ability to speak what's on their mind without having to face the person they are actually saying it to.
I get what you are saying, and it's great that your sugar, BP,cholestral are all good. Medical research spends more time studying fat people with disease than fat people without, so all you hear about is sick fat people. Having said that, watch out for the more hidden side effects of being overweight -- insulin resistance, visceral fat, liver and kidney issues, higher risk of some cancers. More weight just puts more stress on your body, even if you don't see or feel it.
You have? I can't picture that!
I think high self esteem can only lead to positive changes- why not encourage people to feel happy with themselves? I think it can have the effect of motivating them to make a change.
I, for one, have a hard time making positive changes unless I am feeling good.
"Sorry Jodi, I did not post this to be "out to get you" or anything. "
Oh, I didn't think that. At all.
I am beautiful, my fat is not.
