Am I a bad mom if....

I don't freak out when LO chews his stroller straps? He is teething (although no teeth yet, sigh) and in the mouthing stage, and chews on anything and everything in sight. He is fascinated by straps in everything and chews on them if they are in sight. I honestly don't think I could stop him from doing it--even if we give him paci, he usually spits it out after a while and goes for the straps.

DH got stopped today in the mall with LO by someone who was freaking out that LO was choking (he wasn't) and gave DH the "you're a dumb dad" look (he isn't).

  • You could drive yourself nuts keeping a teething LO from chewing on things they're not supposed to.  Assuming the straps aren't small enough to swallow and choke on, what's the harm?  I wouldn't jump to assume that a stranger's little kid chewing on something was actually choking, though, unless there was some sign of distress.

This. Some people might be horrified at things I've let H put in her mouth, but if it won't make her sick or kill her and keeps her happy, whatever.

ETA: I wonder how exactly this person thinks you are able to stop a teething child from chewing on stroller straps when they're in the stroller? Obviously they've either never had a child, or had one so long ago they forgot what it was like.

Oh yes, and what's worse is he has seen the dog chew it and must think, "everyone must do this!"  I do stop that...

Funny!  My LO isn't old enough to go after the dog toys yet, but the dog licks him right on/in the mouth pretty much on a daily basis.  I figure he's helping with his immune system. :)

    This.  A million times.

  • Chewing the straps is the only reason DD will agree to be in the stroller at all.  If we didn't have that, we'd be carrying her everywhere.
