Definition: Obstetrics is the division of medicine that focuses on the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the time immediately following childbirth. Obstetrics also includes the practice of surgery as is pertains to childbirth, including caesarian sections, also known as C-sections.
The practice of obstetrics is often combined with gynecology, the specialty of women's reproductive health.
I'm just curious beause when I was looking for an OB, some had surgery certification under their name and some didn't.
You were looking where? On your health insurance website or something? I bet that information isn't totally accurate.
If there was an OB that you wanted to use but didn't have the surgery cert under their name, I would call the office to inquire. I bet they do surgeries.

Re: Is your OB also a surgeon?
Yes she is but that's not why I picked her. I actually never even thought about it before so it's not important to me.
Mine is

Never heard of an OB that wasn't. I'm pretty sure they all have the training.
Some GYN's may not do deliveries or surgeries due to malpractice insurance reasons but they've had the training.
Maybe you're confusing a family practioner or some other kind of doctor that also delivers babies but may not be a surgeon?
So if you had a gyn that just delivers babies, then they would have someone else do the C/S?
And yes, mine is a surgeon. I was just curious why others didn't have that specifically listed under their name.
Like PP - I always thought that all OB's were surgeons.
