SPD & SPIO (compression) vest use?

DS has SPD & wears a SPIO/compression vest during the day. It helps him a ton but now we are having issues with sleep at night. Does anyone have any experience with kids wearing these during the night? If so, is that all they wear & does their skin do ok with it being on so much? I know a lot of kids use weighted blankets at night but he won't use one so I am looking for another option. TIA for the comments!

Re: SPD & SPIO (compression) vest use?

  • Our OT said he can definitely wear it at night if it helps, I just was wondering if anyone had any experience doing so. Thanks for the answer!

  • We have a full body compression garment. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it at night even if our OT said we could. Not sure how the different suits compare, but DDs skin is really tight in there and needs a chance to breathe during the night. (Ours is a custom by Boston and has very tight zippers and snaps that leave indentations. It doesn't hurt, but she definitely needs a break from it). Likewise, even though she can sometimes head bang at night, I wouldn't let her sleep in her custom helmet 24-7. What about something like a weighted vest if he won't keep the blanket on? A little less obtrusive than a full garment, but admittedly a different sensory experience. . . Fun and Function has some that are relatively inexpensive.

  • Thx Mummy, I'll definitely look into a weighted vest, that's a good idea! His vest essentially looks like a girls bathing suit & has Velcro on the back. It's tight but doesn't leave marks in his skin at all. I was thinking we would need to have times without it during the day as a trade off for using it at night. I'm just looking for anything to help with his sleep cause it's a vicious cycle when he's sleep deprived! Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it!
