Depends after delivery?

I'm a FTM, so I'm not sure how much bleeding goes on after delivery. I've read a few things where women say to use Depends for the first week. Is it really that heavy to need an adult diaper? Any reccomendations on what type of pads to use instead of Depends?

  • I don't remember bleeding so much I would have wanted to use Depends.  I think I used Always with Wings and was happy.

  • Depends are unnecessary.  The hospital will provide some VERY large pads to wear the first couple days and they will be necessary but it will taper off to just a heavy flow after the first few days.  I wore the hospital pads for the first 2-3 days and then I wore Always Overnights with Wings for the the following week and after that it was just regular to light flow pads.

  • You bleed a lot the first week or so, then it turns to something that you could compare to your period.  At the hospital they provide you with HUMUNGO pads and these disposable granny undies that go over them to keep everything in place (since they also provided tucks and then a spray to spray on the tucks pads to help with the pain down there).  They give you stuff to take home too.  After that you can probably switch to some heavy duty pads like the ones with wings and overnights ones.  At least that's what I did.

  • I had a c/s, but plenty of pp bleeding. I would not have needed an adult diaper. I did use Poise Pads since they were long and thick--recommended at my Bradley class. After about a week, I went to regular maxis. I have heard that some girls have a reaction to Always pads, so I avoided that brand--something about the lining on top. I don't use Always normally so decided why risk it.

  • An adult diaper is a little extreme. I got extra absorbent night time pads for the first week, which is when you bleed the most. IMO the hospital pads are too bulky and uncomfortable. I am bringing my own this time for that reason.

ITA! I used the hospital pads the first 24hrs PP then I used overnight pads the next 4-5 days then moved to regular ones. Depends were completely unnecessary. I thought about them but didn't need them...

  • I used these

for the first few days home, and then switched to my regular maxi. No problems. It was heavy at first, but not completely unmanageable.

  • I just used the hospital pads (I'm cheap and didn't want to buy more stuff).  They sent me home with a big pack, and tons of the mesh undies.  I had a C/S so the mesh panties were awesome for not rubbing the incision area.  Yes, the hospital pads are large in size, but not crazy thick.  They didn't bother me at all my first 2 weeks recovering- it's not like I was going jogging or anything.  Once it tapered down and I ran out of hospital pads I just went to regular lighter flow pads or panty liners (can't remember if it was too heavy for a panty liner at that point).

I'm one of the ones that hates Always Pads. It feels like plastic against my skin and I get rashes from them.  I'd go with something softer like Kotex.

  • Regular heavy pads are plenty of protection.

  • I used depends after delivery and it was awesome!  I didn't need them so much because my blood flow was heavy, but our hospital doesn't provide pads so it was just easier to use them and not have to worry about leaking at all!  I used them just while I was in the hospital and then by the time I went home (after 2 days and nights) I was using my regular underwear and regular always infinity pads.  I would totally use depends again just because of the fact that you don't have to worry about leaking or pads slipping or anything like that!

  • Yes. I will use them. I would rather use them in the house and throw away the whole thing rather than get ooooze on my underwear and try to scrub or throw them out. I have one package and when they are gone I will go back to more heavy duty pads. They have the ones that are like underwear with a giant pad in them. It also helps bc your bladder takes a beating and it takes a while to regain that strength. The hospital grade pads are fine but depends will not leak so I did throw some in my bag in case I want to switch from meshy panties and pads to them.

  • A couple of my friends have loved having Depends at the hospital.  They didn't need to worry about huge, loud pads shifting and then leaking.  They didn't use them for a full week, but while at the hospital and maybe a day or two at home they did and said they were great.

  • Lucieslist recommended the Depends panties, and I'm tempted to get them because I don't want to worry about leaking. But I hate sitting on plastic (one of the reasons I'm CDing is that I'm projecting my hatred of sticky awful plastic onto LO) so I may also shell out some change for reusable Lunapanties with their heavy trifold flannel liners.

You are probably thinking that depends are like real diapers. The ones that I think most people would buy are the underwear version for women and they have no plastic in them. I have never heard of lunapanties...must be for that time of the month? Interesting.
