Inducing?

So, because of a 3rd degree tear and other complications with my first one the doctor has recommended inducing our little girl on Thursday, which we decided to go for after weighing out risks etc.  I was wondering if anyone had any tips or things to expect with the process, I'm a little nervous and probably wouldn't be going for it except for the medical reasons...

Re: Inducing?

  • Good luck! I was induced early with #2 due to complications with delivering #1. We tried 3 different times from 37 weeks on (including needing 3 versions since she kept getting out of position) before she finally came just a few days before my EDD. Not sure if the doc has warned you that it might not work and there can be complications. I would make sure to ask what all they plan to try and know the risks. Thankfully mine worked out ok and I was able to deliver vaginally and it was a lot less traumatic (also 3rd tear with #1) for both of us but I was pretty worried with how long it took to finally fully dialate.

  • I was 8 days overdue when I was induced and dilated to 3cm. I was just put on pitocin.  I had no pain until they broke my water 5 hours later and I got my epi right after that.  The process took 11 hours and I pushed for another 3.5 hours.  DD was facing my hip bone and it took a lot of manipulation to rotate her.  Other than that it went very smooth and pain free.  DH and I actually wouldn't mind me being induced again.  It was nice to go in and knowing that she was coming that day instead of worrying about when I was going to go into labor.

  • I'm to at least 3cm possibly a little more but she hasn't dropped... I think they are planning on breaking my water first to see if I go naturally and then probably pitocin...

I was induced with my DD this past spring.  Same situation as what you described.  I was about 4 cm dilated and they just broke my water.  She was born 2.5 hours later so it was pretty fast and furious.

One thing I would recommend is to have some gatorade and energy gel on hand.  Even in the short time I was in labor i really needed a few pick me ups.  Since I am prone to throwing up during labor the energy gel was good because it was not solid food.
