Food Allergy

Throwing up after peanut butter?

My son is 2 1/2 and has always loved peanut butter and we have been giving it to him for over a year now.  The past 3 times I fed it to him, he threw up shortly after. This is over a week and a half.  Does this sound like it could be an allergy? Has anyone heard of this happening? I called the pedi and the nurse acted confused about it and said to give it a week or so but I was wondering if anyone knows anything about it. Thanks!!

Re: Throwing up after peanut butter?

  • It could definitely be an allergy.  Allergies can crop up at anytime.  My son just recently started having a reaction to strawberries at 2 years old.

Vomiting can be an allergic reaction.  The one and only time he had PB he vomited profusely(along with hives and swelling).  I'd see an allergist - just to be sure.  PB allergies can be life threatening.  I completely credit our Epi-pen as the reason I still have my son with me.

  • I agree with seeing an allergist and I'd hold off on the peanut butter to avoid more vomiting. My son has a severe peanut allergy and vomiting is one of his symptoms. A blood test should hopefully give you some answers.

All of this. Exactly (and an Epi-pen - well, actually 2 of them -  also saved my DS's life when he was having an anaphylactic reaction to an exposure and his throat closed).

    I'm sorry you're dealing with this. :(

  • It could be.. or it could be a coincidence with something else. but better play it safe and avoid peanuts for now.

Did he complain of any discomfort with his tongue / belly? Any rashes? Not that you have to have these symptoms, but the more symptoms the more likely it is an allergy.

It wouldn't hurt to get him to an allergist (like pp said) and have him tested.  good luck

  • Yes, it could be an allergy.  My son was 3.5 when we discovered his nut allergy.  Three times in a row (separate outings) he threw up after tasting one bite of a family member's peanut butter ice cream.  Turns out that he is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts.  I certainly hope your son is not allergic, but definitely get him tested asap and avoid nuts until you receive the results.  I didn't know before DS was diagnosed, but each and every reaction could vary in severity - meaning, even though his past reactions have been throwing up, his next reaction could be more severe.
