Food Allergy

Intro and advice needed!!!

Hello everyone, my daughter is 6 and 1/2 months old and has many allergies/intolerances. Her reactions are stomach pain, nasal congestion, watery and mucus stool etc. We are making our own food for her but I cannot seem to find anything for a cereal, most contain soy but she is very sensistive and if the product doesn't contain the allergen but the facility packages them then she has a reaction. Please help!!! TIA

Re: Intro and advice needed!!!

  • Do you have a Whole Foods near you?  I've had a lot of luck with them.

  • Is she allergic to rice? Perhaps a rice cereal?

  • No she is not allergic to rice but most rice cereals contain soy.

  • Yes I do, is there a special brand that you recommend?
  • We've used BeachNut Homestyle with success! I couldn't find any soy in the ingredients.
    Lilypie Second Birthday tickers
  • what are her allergies / intolerance?

I know earths best oatmeal does not contain soy.. my son eats it every day.. But it does have wheat so it all depends on what her allergies are.

  • Its really difficult.  I was never able to use any cereals with my son.  I don't have any recs for good ones, but stay away from Gerber.  I'd go to whole foods and have an associate help you.  They are very helpful when I have questions, some even have an allergy associate that knows all the different names of allergens so you don't get fooled.  Good luck!

Well we really are not 100% certain we know everything she is allergic to, she doesn't show any anaphylactic symptoms because hers are all gastrointestinal. To test for certain allergens they would have to scope her and test from the inside, I guess our Pediatrician and GI specialist are just hoping she grows out of them! Since I am breastfeeding I did the elimination diet and so far Dairy/soy/wheat/nuts/treenuts/eggs/shellfish..... I don't eat anything proccessed or packaged due to the fact of cross contamination and or other products containing the allergens. The most severe was nuts she had ecxema, a rash, and terrible stomach pains. I feel so lost at the store because most times I have to research the company before I go to double check the ingredients and other products they make. I do however love the Enjoy life brand, that is the only brand that has worked for me.

if i was you i would get her tested by a pediatric allergist.  Wouldn't hurt.  I know you said her symptoms are gestational but  you also mentioned she got eczema after you introduced nuts.  I would get a RAST test done on her (at least by 1).

  • Yes I think you are right, I do need to test her. Also if anyone couldn't find a starter cereal for their LO did you just start with a fruit in the morning?

I misunderstood what kind of cereal you were looking for, we used the happy baby brown rice cereal as a starter. It's labeled as soy free, here's a link

Thank you so much!!!! I have been searching for quite some time and I look forward to trying it out!
